What can Mamdani actually do as mayor of NYC?

Not a resident there so I am curious what their local laws allow the mayor to have control of vs other big metro city mayors.
I would imagine he will have a big say in NYPD which I can foresee being utterly screwed if he wins.
Taxes and policies I imagine have to be changed via their city council or representatives..
But what can he do immediately with a pen stroke?

One term of Mandami wont ruin the city unfortunately. Consistent elections of folks like him will. However, people will not be able to see a quick cause and effect ruination of NYC
To be clear, I dont want NYC ruined. However, I wish people could more easily and directly see a quick cause and effect of the destruction from left wing policies

It's not what he can do as mayor.
His ideology is a cancer and if you leave it unchecked it will spread through the whole state and country.
Look at the UK.

Completely agree that it’s just further allowing the cancer to metastasize.
I only ask the question as how much damage can he do in 1 term.
Like others have said a slow burn is likely worse… multiple terms and other like him is the true death sentence.

He has a city council that leans left so he can screw up a lot of things. I've seen this show before. Freezing rents while raising property taxes creates a great squeeze that can result in abandoned buildings especially in lower rent areas.
Add to that increased policies fostering crime, and the last shadows of city shoppers and tourists will vanish. There are a lot of empty retail spaces already.

We're seeing muslims get into more positions of power around the globe. I don't have a problem with muslims, in general, but they have some fricking radical, whacky beliefs. See the muslims going around to convenience stores in Houston telling them they can't sell pork and booze and threatening them with protests.
They can be assholes in their own groups. Stay the frick out of American politics though.

Isn't this guy an immigrant? He cannot ascend to President. DeBlasio was borderline socialist also. I don't care if he wins. Let New Yorkers do what they're gonna do. An obvious downside is we will hear about this guy non stop.
