New Archbishop of New Orleans

quote:

Pope Leo XIV has appointed Most Reverend James F. Checchio, bishop of Metuchen, as Coadjutor Archbishop of New Orleans.

The appointment was publicized in Washington, D.C. on September 24, 2025, by Cardinal Christophe Pierre, apostolic nuncio to the United States. Archbishop Gregory M. Aymond is the current archbishop of New Orleans, and the appointment as coadjutor archbishop confers on Bishop Checchio the right of succession for the Archdiocese of New Orleans.

Archbishop Aymond turned 75 recently which is the normal time they step down. Vatican asked him to stay through the end of the bankruptcy proceedings for Archdiocese. Wanted to clarify that this is something that was expected.

Bruh has to leave a nice area of New Jersey for dogshit New Orleans and take over a diocese in the middle of bankruptcy and sex abuse scandals. What did he do to get that Cardinal pissed at him

Apparently Aymond gets to keep those duties along with sucking up to Gayle & Mickey

Aymond will remain Archbishop through finalization of bankruptcy. There is an age limit where Archbishop submit their resignation and Aymond just recently hit that age.

Relatively young… 59 yrs old. He will be here for a while, or he will be the first Nola Archbishop to be promoted in a long time.

Not much of a pastoral history. Been an admin almost his entire career. Extensive finance background which I guess makes sense considering he will need to deal with post bankruptcy issues.

No known connections to the area.

I get that but getting transplanted from a nice area to this dumpster fire, even with the bankruptcy proceedings behind it, seems like a punishment

I am pretty sure he will do all right.

French Quarter parsonage, free tickets to the owners suite to Saints and Pelicans games, probably access to some retreat cabin on the Northshore, etc.

Fun fact, I randomly met this guy at a barber shop in DC one time. I had no idea what a “nuncio” was until that day.

Don't forget the access to Jesuit and St. Paul's boys, if he's like the rest of the archdiocese

The church does this; what seems like punishment on the outside is preparation for something bigger later on.

I was waiting for someone to say watching those teams in their current state might be an act of contrition or penance.
