cross posting from the outdoors board bc there's more traffic here

the seats in my 99 f-250 lariat are starting to really wear out. is reupholstery in these older trucks something that i can DIY, or should i get it done professionally? anyone got any recommendations or experience with this?

Katzkins are a professional install. Go talk to your local Ford dealer.

Depend depends. There’s some nice high-end covers specific to certain models that you can get.

Those can be applied at home.

Otherwise, I would probably take it to an upholstery shop in whatever the closest midsize city to you. They will actually apply new fabric to the existing seat.

99% of upholstery places don't sew them, but just order the leather kits on the internet.

I would look at some auto forums for suggestions. There are several companies online you can order these from.

I was quoted $1600 for just the front seats for my f-150. All leather. Local shop. Katzskin wanted 2100.

thanks for the links. my biggest concern is that i want it to look like the OEM seat covers and not some loose, shitty looking aftermarket covers. from what i've been reading on some Ford forums, it sounds like getting it done professionally is the best bet

Katzkins are what the regional Ford dealers would use for upgrading seats before covid changed inventories, when they ran the annual "leather and liner" promotion on F150 XLT's every summer to clear out the model year. They look and feel OEM, more like factory leather seats not like some slip on cover. It's not cheap, so it depends a bit on what you want with that truck. An auto upholstery shop will also have other options.

I had them put in when I bought my F150 in 2021.

ha, so it's probably three times as much now. you were happy with the results though? this is my DD and will be for the foreseeable future, so i'd rather pay more and get it done right.

Very happy, of course I upgraded from existing cloth (XLT). Still looks new, has held up well.

I got my 1998 Dodge Ram 2500 done professionally. New carpet, headliner, front seats. I had an old Datsun I reupholstered myself, but that was a labor of love and easier than this.

You can do it yourself. I did two trucks, an 09 Sierra and my 17 Silverado.

May need some extra large wrenches for the seat bolts but it’s pretty easy. 4-6hrs on a weekend.

Just get some of those cow skin rugs and lay them over the bad seats.

Yes, and they fit very well and are likely a 1/4 of the cost of a full reupholstery.

Prices a have definitely gone up on Katzkin. 2024 Jeep Wrangler 4 door was roughly $2K this year. Had it done a few months ago.

I would recommend going this route if it’s in your budget. I personally like the Katzkin more than OEM. It is more comfortable and seems to be better quality.
