Samsung confirms its $1,800+ fridges will start showing you ads

TL;DR
Samsung is rolling out a new software update to its Family Hub refrigerators in the US.
The update adds promotions and advertisements to the refrigerator’s display when it is idle.
Samsung has confirmed the pilot program, though some Cover Screen themes will remain ad-free.

Samsung started rolling out an update to its refrigerators that brought ads to the display, whether you like it or not. The whole situation is rather surreal but not entirely unsurprising. There were some doubts that the changelog wasn’t real or that it belonged to a different product. Now, Samsung has confirmed to us that ads are indeed coming to its refrigerators.

Samsung is committed to innovation and enhancing every day value for our home appliance customers. As part of our ongoing efforts to strengthen that value, we are conducting a pilot program to offer promotions and curated advertisements on certain Samsung Family Hub refrigerator models in the U.S. market.
As a part of this pilot program, Family Hub refrigerators in the U.S. will receive an over-the-network (OTN) software update with Terms of Service (T&C) and Privacy Notice (PN). Advertising will appear on certain Family Hub refrigerator Cover Screens. The Cover Screen appears when a Family Hub screen is idle. Ad design format may change depending on Family Hub personalization options for the Cover Screen, and advertising will not appear when Cover Screen displays Art Mode or picture albums.
Advertisements can be dismissed on the Cover Screens where ads are shown, meaning that specific ads will not appear again during the campaign period.

It’s still unclear which exact refrigerators are getting the ad infestation, but Samsung’s current Family Hub-equipped lineup in the US starts at $1,800 and goes all the way up to $3,500. It doesn’t seem like users can entirely turn off ads, which is a shame. Disconnecting the fridge from the internet might stop the ads, but you will also inevitably lose out on several smart features you paid for.

Just wait until they lock you out of your fridge until you watch a 90 second ad.

Imagine you are just trying to get a glass of water and have to see an ad for local lonely busty milfs. Ridiculous.

Samsung fridges are garbage.

Why does a fridge need software in the first place?

We had a Samsung refrigerator some years ago. Think we got it around 2015-2016. It was pure garbage. Only lasted five years before it just died. The repair man who came to look at it was amazed we’d gotten 5 years out of it. Won’t make that mistake again.

People keep buying this bull this should have known this had the possibility of happening

When did fridges start needing software?
Posted on 9/19/25 at 4:19 pm to Shexter
Old fridges need to make a comeback. We need a Speed Queen of fridges. I'd love a bad arse old fridge.

Looks like I’m saving $1500 and getting dependable used appliances.

Frankly, it’s stupid. All I need is a fridge that
1. Keeps things cold
2. Keeps other things frozen
3. Dispenses cold water
4. Dispenses ice
(All that is possible on technology from the 1970s)
All the other bullshite they put on refrigerators now is just more shite to break. We need to go back to where refrigerators were simple, robust, and built to last.

I feel like if they’re running ads through my god damn fridge, that I should get a discount on the fridge.
Posted on 9/19/25 at 4:25 pm to Shexter
Now you can bring that annoying gas pump advertising experience into your home. Who wouldn’t want that?

Youll need to be reminded of a new HIV medication like that show you on the football games commercials

For real… this is a terrible scheme. I’d be ticked if I bought a fridge and after I paid for it, it started showing me ads. Eff that!

Who in the hell would spend $1800 on the refrigerator? Other than a refrigerator, freezer, water and ice dispenser, what other extras are on refrigerators these days? I honestly don’t know because I have not had the need to buy a refrigerator in 19 years.

Imagine having anything other than a fridge that just keeps your items cold. Why do people need displays of anything on their fridge?
FWIW, I haven’t bought a new fridge in probably 12-13 years.

Sumbitch is built like a tank and eats electricity.
The only two negatives are the freezer isn’t frost free, that’s a consistent pita to live with and there’s no in-door water/ice.
But you could get 20 years of problem-free service out of that appliance.
