In a settlement announced on Monday by the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC), P.F. Chang's has agreed to pay a man $80,000 and retrain its employees on religious accommodations after denying him a job based on his request to have Sundays off due to his religious beliefs.
quote:
According to the EEOC's charge investigation, during the interview process in August 2024 at the P.F. Chang's location in Birmingham, the applicant requested Sundays off due to his religious beliefs. The EEOC's investigation concluded he was not hired because of the accommodation request.
This violated Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, which prohibits discrimination based on an individual's religion and requires employers to reasonably accommodate an employee's religious observance or practice, unless doing so would cause undue hardship.

How spicy do you want your fine, Chang’s?

I worked retail, and working Sundays just goes with the territory. Everyone knows this going in.

This is not a good development.

Did you tell your employer you wanted Sundays off to observe your religion and then get terminated as well?

This isn’t a “new development,” it’s a federal law.

I grew up in a time where we were glad to have the job. I didn’t know you could even expect such a thing.

This has been a thing.

It's not new, it's just not followed.
Also, I completely disagree that this is not good.

unless PFC was stupid enough to openly state that in their interview notes somewhere then it seems to me it would be incredibly difficult to prove

And it's always applied in an identical fashion, right?
If I need someone for 8 hours/day and their religion says they have to stop and pray to Mecca, very loudly, for 10 minutes every hour on the hour, I shouldn't be forced to hire them. Their conditions don't match mine, we should both be free to pursue an employment agreement that suits both of us.

The fastest way to get rid of the 1964 Civil Rights act is to start enforcing it rigorously against leftists.

I agree. Seems like this must have been the case.

This came from the civil rights act.

Do they submit to whatever whims or desires each individual employee requests? This is a terrible ruling as many people work on Sunday, Saturday’s for Jewish. How about not working after dark because of fears of the dark, rainy days for fears of getting wet or sick. If employees have problems working shifts then should they really expect working at places that require shifts ?

Yep. Time to get busy.

So, all the college football fans suddenly become Seventh Day Adventists so they get Saturday off?

I don’t see how anybody in the restaurant business (save Chick-fil-A) can reasonably expect to have Sundays off.
I’d like a job as an NFL WR, but I want Sundays off. Ridiculous.
And $80k in damages?

Well this is a completely stupid point to make when discussing religious beliefs, but also this would absolutely be worked around if the person has a documented disability.

Hey, I agree. We should get rid of the EEOC and all laws that make these sorts of rulings possible. If we aren't going to do that, then we should enforce them equally instead of how we've been doing it.
