Ok, so I think most people agree that it's such a strange scene that doesn't land well, but what about the scene right before it?

quote:

Will: "Great or maybe we could get together and just eat a bunch of caramels."

Skylar: "What?"

I absolutely love the movie, but these two scenes really miss, and hard.

A) Bringing up Good Will Hunting every now and then is necessary because it’s awesome.

B) Disagree on both accounts.

How about them Apples was a renewed phrase because of this movie and it took on a new and awesome meaning because of it.

Why don’t we “eat a buncha caramels” is kinda great because he’s pointing out that coffee is just an arbitrary adage for a non-date that we both want to see if it should be a date.

My wife and I were at college and agreed to meet at a coffee house to talk if she had a free time after some church thing. We were using a coffee date as a substitute to see if we wanted to go on a real date.

ETA: I liked this movie as a HS Student watching it. It was probably my introduction to film as opposed to movies.

My oldest is 18 and at college and loved it just as much as I did. After I watched it with him, he asked to watch it 2x since then.

My 16 YO liked it just as much when we watched it this summer.

It’s NOT great. It’s a pedantic, bratty juvenile little thing to point out, like an insecure guy trying to show how smart he is or trying too hard to make a joke. That’s the point, and it doesn’t land, and her reaction shows this

I think we're in the minority here, but the way you put it makes it make sense. He's super insecure at that point in the movie, and he's trying to show his intellectual superiority. And she's like, whatever. That really works i guess.

He is WILDLY insecure… that’s the point.

Again, it’s a bit of a dick move but he is literally the smartest person in the room everywhere he being an autistic version oft being the smartest person in the room.

His relationship with Skylar is a version of settling.

I definitely didn’t think the ‘apples’ joke was as awesome as most people. I just thought it really didn’t make much sense in the context.

And we all know that the guy he is talking to when he says how bout them apples is the brother of the Allstate mayhem guy Dean Winters, right?

It's a young guy awkwardly trying to come across as cool. I don't know if Damon wrote it to be that way or if him and Affleck were just young and thinking that was 100% cool.

I think that it misses with a portion of the audience because they didn't realize that it was a phrase that went back to the start of the 20th century through two world wars, Vaudeville, and Mae West.

Well no shite...that was almost literally the entire point of the movie. This prototypical Boston meat head just so happens to have one of the smartest brains known to man. He's arrogant, insecure, and a prick, and always tries to show everyone how smart he is to belittle them. It's his coping mechanism for dealing with all the abuse he's been through, which was why it was such a big deal with Robin Williams finally breaks through the tough exterior.

You're almost complaining about the literal point of the movie.

I get that, but Louie CK bit was spot on. If the guy says no, then what?

It could still work. “Well I got her number. Perhaps you might like those apples.” lol
