Warfare (A24) Streaming on HBO Max

HBO just added one of the best original movies of the year. Judging by the box office performance I know a lot of you haven’t watched it. Currently sitting at 93% RT critic and audience scores. Do yourself a favor and turn up the volume.
quote:
Written and directed by Iraq War veteran Ray Mendoza and Alex Garland (Civil War, 28 Days Later), Warfare embeds audiences with a platoon of American Navy SEALs on a surveillance mission gone wrong in insurgent territory. A visceral, boots-on-the-ground story of modern warfare and brotherhood, told like never before: in real time and based on the memory of the people who lived it.
Let’s keep this spoiler free. Just wanted to announce it was streaming. Bump this thread to join the existing discussion.

Arguably my favorite film of the year so far. Watching it in Imax was amazing.

I didn't realize it was an A24 film, saw the preview for it before Peacemaker last night and thought we'll probably try to watch it soon. Looked like it had a good cast.

Been waiting for this to drop on HBO. Will be watching this weekend.

It’s excellent. Very realistic and not for the squeamish.

Watched this a few months back when it hit streaming. It’s good, intense as frick too. I can only imagine what it’s like to fight enemies in a city-type atmosphere like that where enemy fire is coming basically from all directions. Scary shite.

Oh my god, 44 minutes in, not sure if I need this much stress right now
frick.

People looking for likes not fights

That was damn good. Seemed like it ended kinda abruptly but that worked.

Writers said that was the point. How tense everything is then boring for a while and then go to absolute shite out of nowhere and then go right back nothing. No rhyme or reason to any of it

I’m obviously in the minority but I didn’t find it all that great. You’ve got a team of SEALS 5 years into the global war on terror who are standing around in house surrounded by the enemy, know the upper floor is left un guarded and they all are to shell shocked from an IED to cover any windows or entrances for a extended period of time.
They are trained better than that.

It’s a movie that is as close to a real life event as could possibly be. Hardly any of it is fiction like Lone Survivor.

They are the ones that made this movie. It’s not just a made up operation. The co-director, Ray Mendoza, was there. He is the portrayed by the Native American actor that was on the comms.

I just think the general population has a misunderstanding of what SEAL missions (both successful and unsuccessful) actually look like. They think it’s all guns and glory and elite marksmanship and perfect decision making all the time. shite just isn’t like that. It doesn’t look like Lone Survivor. From what I’ve gathered from podcasts and books, most SEAL missions that are successful you’ll never really know about and make movies about because it’s probably a lot like the first 15 minutes of Warfare, just communications and movement and securing.
SEALs are badass mfers but they’re human. They make mistakes. And even when they don’t make mistakes, shite just happens in war, unpredictable, life ending shite and they have to adjust to that on the fly. If this movie makes you think it makes the SEALs look bad, you need a reality check. It was actually a miracle they got out with zero team members killed considering the enemy pretty much knew where they were from jump. And it shows that they’re still elite but they’re not perfect. Not every mission is a success, even for SEALs

Hate the realistic war movies but always watch them at least once. Fortunate enough all my combat was in BFE helmand and not urban.

Not sure if that was good or bad for me to watch. I think i needed it to remind me of some things i need to appreciate more.

Watched a Green Beret react to the movie on YouTube and he straight up said they were screwed once they lost air support. He said most special operations won’t even do most missions without it especially not in missions like the one they were on where they’re basically surrounded on all sides, providing Overwatch.
Without Overwatch to protect them, they would have no idea if the enemy was sitting outside their building on the rooftops or right outside their front door. They were fricked
