Unpopular Opinion: Jamal Adams is the best LSU safety (binging LSU highlights pregame)

He would have won a Thorpe or Bednarik Award if the team had more success.
For starters we agree that TM7 is a corner/ hybrid his highlight film will always be unique. Having said that, please enjoy his college highlight film. I felt like he was the most trustworthy leader in the field for that team of stars lol. On that team, coaching let us down (schematically on offense and OL coaching).
Eta: his ability to attack the run, impact the defense, and bring energy to the defense while lacking great coverage skills reminded of Earl Thomas when he left for the draft. Injuries and circumstances de- railed
a HOF, which happens occasionally. He would've been that kind of impact player if he went to a different team.

That 2016 defense in general was one of the best we've ever had. Jamal hunting down Lamar Jackson in that bowl game was wild. Dude flashed difference maker speed
Tommy Casanova is hard to argue with, his resume is pretty wild with 3 All SEC's and 2 All Americans
I do think Jamal is better than Laron.

Mine would be Laron. I liked Delpit better than Adams.
Was Casanova a safety? Obviously didnt see him play but I know of his accolades

If someone made ther the top 5 safeties of the "modern" era as:
Reid
Landry
Steltz
Delpit
Adams
I don't think that list would get laughed at. Some folks are going to want to swap Chad Jones for someone. Loston might even make some folks list as well.
But, the All Americans (and Adams was just short of consensus All American) - are those 5 I listed and Jones, shouldn't be pooh poohed.
I think a healthy Grant Delpit is LSU's greatest safety. I don't think that makes your opinion unpopular, however. Lots of folks were fond of Adam's play.

Yes and no. He was a Swiss Army knife - playing running back and defensive back, as well as return duties. He was definitely a cornerback in 1969. I don't know how much he played safety in '70 and '71.
He was a safety in the NFL, for sure.

Adams was always anchoring the team because the offense was inefficient. He never wavered. Delpit was great, but he didn't have a lasting, all- time impact, IMO.

2-time All American. I get that the 2019 accolades ending up being a career reward, but he played hurt all that year, as well.
A few media folks consider him the best college safety of the 21st Century. (ETA: Some folks might favor Ed Reed. Even Laron makes some 21st Century lists. So, that's 3 from the Greater New Orleans area.)

It was a QB's brain in a safety's body. His anticipation and reaction time, while not ball focused and disruptive as whatever HB7 had (unteachable), was play and flow focused to the point I was surprised when he didn't play perfectly. In 2019, at times it was obvious he knew the play, knew his assignment, and just couldn't quite get there because of his injuries.
A great, great team player. Almost a throwback.

This, 2018 Delpit had one of the best seasons any DB ever had in LSU history. Delpit was much better than Adams at LSU in my mind, not even close. I would pick Delpit all day every day over Adams, and I like Adams and what he did here.
He played so well in 2018, they gave him the Thorpe in 2019, when he didn't have nearly the season he had in '18.

Jamal had a great NFL career and was really good at LSU. Laron, Steltz, eric reid and several others were better college players.

I was just vomimg to post this aboit Delpit. O think that he was the combo of cover guy and tackler when he was healthy. Most safeties can be broken down to either great, hard hitting tacklers or great deep cover guys. Delpit had a good bit of both.

As much as I loved Chad Jones and Laron Landry's style of play, it was at times athletic and instinctual, rather than fundamentally sound (the armless missile school of tackling could take over at times).
When healthy, Delpit was about as fundamentally sound a defensive football player LSU has ever produced, IMHO. The fact that he was a teammate of Justin Jefferson (more or less the offensive equivalent of that) makes that team all the more amazing.
