For those old enough, is this how the country felt after the CIA murdered RFK?

As a 41 yr old father/businessman, Charlie promoted ideals and values that resonated with me, most on this board.

RFK’s image and message similarly resonated with people in the 60’s, giving older people peace and younger people hope.

Any similarities about the two political assassinations?

Hoping, unlike RFK’s vision, Charlie’s lives long through us and his organization.

RFK was probably more traumatic because he was higher profile, and it conjured up very painful recent memories. It was only 4 1/2 years after JFK and 2 months after MLK.

It’s different because RFK was a national figure. Charlie was beloved by most conservatives and those plugged in to politics, especially the youth. I was surprised how many of my family and coworkers had no idea who he was and they are all right leaning. They took him out before he had a chance to really become a household name to the general not plugged in public. I have no doubt he would have run for office and been very successful.

RFK was worse, he was a presidential contender, the MLK killing had just happened and there were ongoing riots across the country

This is part of what makes me think not much is going to happen. As bad as things feel now, by all accounts I've been able to find the 60s still seemed to be even worse.

Spoke to my dad about this, I entered stage right in 1970 (Yea gen X!) so no direct connection, he said RFK was damn bad but his mind was still screwed from 1963 so he was a bit hardened.

We had 9/11 and years of war to harden us.

The younger folks today have no frame of reference on how bad things can get. This will harden them, and that makes me all the more sad.

Hard to say . My generation has seen more than its fair share of assassinations - and attempts. JFK, RFK, MLK, Malcolm X, RWR, DJT and so forth.

It is almost numbing and I hate to say this, kind of expected.

As for RFK, CK...they were different. One was an aspiring POTUS and the other, a reasonable voice for everyday folks

Not even close. The whole Nation lamented and weeped back when Today half rejoice and think Kirk/MAGA deserves such a fate for their beliefs.

Satan is as happy as it will ever be. Kinda like those celebrating their political oppositions assassination. It will be short lived and come with a heavy and painful cost.

Was referring to myself, but I can see where I left it vague.
My bad.

It's not close.

RFK - who was killed by a loon, not the CIA - was a major presidential candidate whose own brother had been killed by a Commie. It would have been similar to if that kid had gotten Trump when he tried.

I'm a conservative and I had no idea who Kirk was. It's horrible that it happened but I didn't know the guy beforehand, so it hurts a lot less.

I’d be more afraid if it was the presidential candidate. Don’t get me wrong this is tragic, but in my opinion doesn’t hold the same gravity as a president getting assassinated.

I’m not quite that old but close. Looking back there are some big differences between now and then. First, there was some common ground between folks regardless of political affiliation on what was acceptable conduct. Second the news was the news. It was simply reported and folks formed their own opinions. It wasn’t presented as a form of entertainment catering to your viewers. Third we didn’t have social media to incite and promote hatred, differences. Fourth, rural and urban folks weren’t that different. A lot of urban folks were only a generation removed from their rural roots. We are so different now depending on age, regionality etc it’s hard to find common ground. In my opinion, the divide has gotten larger as the media, corporate America has force fed us policy on issues rather than letting folks form their own opinions.

Sirhan Sirhan was not a Republican. He was a citizen of Jordan. Nobody praised the bastard. So it was shocking and people were angry but not at other Americans. So in some ways this is worse. It is a betrayal of the civil fabric of America.

Absolutely not. The entire country totally bought into the lone single gunner propaganda.

The death of CK is worse.

He is a Christian martyr that died for Jesus.

One is just a politician but the other was called by Jesus to become a fisherman of men.

My first memory was watching horses pull a box with a flag on it when I was four - JFK’s funeral. Was nine when MLK and RFK were killed and can’t remember much at all about the political climate then, but my parents and grandparents cried a good bit about it. They were all Alabama Democrats back then.

Been registered as a D my entire life but have voted straight R tickets since 2012. Yesterday’s assassination has motivated me to change my party affiliation in the next few days.
