Grown people in New Orleans obsessed over where they went to HS. What is this?

In the years I’ve been here, it seems like this conversation comes up amongst my friends who are locals a lot. They talk about their High Schools all the time or ask others where they went to school as a basic getting to know them question.
I’ve come to realize this is a standard part of New Orleans “culture” or something. But it seems like a weird thing to be proud of as a city-wide phenomenon. Like why is it cool or quirky to obsess over HS years later? Everywhere else it’s viewed as off putting.

This is also a common thing in San Antonio.

It’s weird. They all peaked in high school.

It's called local checking. Can't be too careful that a transplant might be lurking in front of you these days.

The downvoters peaked in HS

Man the gate keeping is insane around here. I grew up in Mobile, coming to Saints games my whole life. But locals act like they can’t believe you would dare move to their precious city that desperately needs transplants because it keeps losing tax-paying, productive citizens every year.

What does it matter? It used to be you could tell a lot about a person from NOLA by finding out which high school they went to.
Also, for the poorer and middle class in NOLA, high school was it - so they were proud where they went - even prouder if it was their neighborhood school

Everywhere else it’s viewed as off putting.

Dude I don’t even need to give you a specific place. I’ll just say it’s weird EVERYWHERE else

How am I suppose to know if you're good people or not? I need some context to your background and social status.

This is a ridiculous post. The reason we ask when meeting someone is that you instantly know a shite load of information about an individual based upon which high school they went too.

Where did you go to high school?

It’s not even weird in Texas
What does it matter what college someone went to?

Says a lot about the opportunities around here if your HS is still the determining factor on where you are 20 years later.

Different societies use different markers to distinguish between different social classes. Some go off of profession, income, what church you attend, what your last name is, physical appearance, social media following, etc.
Because of the nature of New Orleans public and private schools, what school you attended is a pretty easy marker for social classes.

Noticed this when I lived there in 2007. Miserable. My GF was obsessed with one high school and said all her life she dreamed to marry a guy from that school. I repeatedly said that is insanely stupid. Needless to say, it didnt work out.
