First SEC Game

I am from Iowa and am in the area on a clinical rotation for physical therapy school. My dad and I wanted to experience the ultimate SEC environment with a night game at Death Valley so we will be there this Saturday for the Florida game which will also be our first ever SEC game. Just wanted to come on here and see if anyone could offer some guidance on where to tailgate, when to get there, or any other tips/tricks to get the full experience. We could not be more excited and look forward to the environment Saturday. We'll be rooting for the Tigers and wearing purple and gold! Thanks in advance.

-Chimes or WalkOns dinner Friday night
-Saturday explore campus all day and let people know you’re from out-of-state (arrive campus before noon, or earlier)
-see Mike the Tiger (right next to stadium)
-Watch band come down the hill
-See LSU band do pregame before kickoff (be in your seats 15-30 minutes before kickoff)
-win money at Lauberge casino after LSU win
If you just walk up to random tailgates that look interesting to you and say “hey we’re from out of state our first SEC game, what do you recommend we go walk and see?”…. #1 you’ll get some good food and drinks I’m sure and #2 they’ll point you to where you should go next and what time

We plan to get into town early to claim a parking spot in Hayfield/Gourrier South. Is that a good plan and how early should we get there? Thinking of bringing basic tailgate stuff like grill and cooler and food to at least have a "home base" and our own drinks/food, and then a lot of walking around and exploring the rest of the day. Getting in late Friday night to our hotel. Will be in town all day for the game and heading back out Sunday morning.

Night SEC game in Tiger Stadium…you’re in for a treat. Florida games are always intense.

While I would never veto wearing LSU gear, I think you’ll get more random people seeking you out and outwardly welcoming you to food/drink if wear Iowa stuff.
Maybe Iowa shirt and LSU hat…

I would say as long as you get to campus before noon you’ll be good. I’d try to aim for around 11, but that’s just me.

Do not bring a grill or anything like that. Bring an ice chest for some walking around drinks. Honestly you could get by with not bringing anything, but better safe than sorry. Don’t worry about food, you’ll get more than enough of of that bouncing around tailgates and meeting people.

This is smart. As others have said, go see Mike’s habitat, watch the band walk down victory hill, etc. I always head to the stadium an hour before kickoff. That should give you plenty of time to get to your seats and watch pregame.
Let people know that y’all are from out of state and in town for PT school, and it’s your first SEC game. Wearing some Iowa gear (if you’re an Iowa fan) could be a good conversation starter. But a simple “we are from out of state, can you point me towards xyz or do y’all have any recommendations on things to see” will do the trick. You’ll get more drinks and food thrown at you than you know what to do with… Also along those lines, remember to pace yourelf. It’s a marathon not a sprint. Gamedays can be very long, especially if it’s sunny and hot.

In between these, go in the P-Mac and watch the band do the halftime show.

Any specific lots that are "must-experience" and welcoming to strangers - or is everything going to be equally hospitable? And on the contrary any to stay away from? Appreciate all the tips - beyond excited for Saturday. Will be wearing an Iowa Hawkeyes shirt.

Agree with this. If you have not heard the full LSU marching band in the Maravich assembly center, you are missing out. They are absolutely amazing and it will pierce your ears.
