Any guesses why MTV isn’t the primary broadcaster of their own awards?

I haven’t watched MTV since the 1990s. My guess is nobody watches MTV so they went to an alternate.

They want more people to watch it so they put it on multiple channels.

I’m sure Ridiculousness is playing on repeat

it’s the YouTube awards obviously.
It’s unclear what requires the VMAs to be on MTV in the first place

Last MTV awards I watched was when Jack Black, Sarah Michelle Geller did a parody LOTR video.

The BET awards are on all the Paramount channels too. It's a corporate strategy

Most cable channels struggle to fill airtime with anything worth watching. These simulcasts are a way to get as many viewers as possible for something because nothing else of value is being bumped.

We watched it last night- I figured that my wife didn't want to watch another 4 hours of NFL Football, and I really care either way about the Sunday Night Game. I can't believe that Busta & Mariah Carey got their first Moon Men EVER last night- crazy. Busta was great- he was winded afterwards though
Overall, it was not great, but it filled time.

The wife had the VMAs on last night after dinner. She watched a little of it but turned it off. It wasn't interesting in the least.
I was trying to remember the last VMAs I watched and actually enjoyed. I think it was in the early 2000s. Weezer performed Hash Pipe live.
