How unprofessional can one f’ing be? It seems the new trend for onsite reporters is to hold up and read notes off their cell phone. At least try and f’ing hide it.

Rant over.

You’re probably too young to remember when anchors and street reporters used to read off of paper legal pads.

The competency crisis has pretty much shattered any youthful memories I had of distinguished careers. Its permeated all levels of society.

Local news running on small budgets hiring people for as cheap as possible.

Can't believe this is happening

That’s what I was thinking. What’s the difference between reading off a phone in your hand or a note card in your hand?

This is actually it. I talked to someone in the news industry and was shocked that they are hiring these kids straight out of college with a Journalism bachelor’s for $50 to $60k and working them like slaves. Local news is basically AA minor leagues for people trying to land a major market or national news gig. Half of these people drop out and end up waiting tables or being a barista after two or three years.

They are actors reading scripts. What do you expect?

I remember when there was a job called “proofreading”, and it was considered important in news print.

Agree

If they can, we can.

Eliminate their job. One less link in value chain.

If local news is reporting it, the OT has posted about it at least 48 hours prior.

This is 100% true, with the possible exception of the salary. It might actually be less that 50K in smaller markets.

Baton Rouge is a decent sized market. Not huge, but not podunk...and the vast majority of the local affiliate's on-air people are under the age of 30.

Gone are the days of the grizzled veteran reporters and anchormen.

You think they should remember all of that shite without any notes? They do a story or two a day.
