DeBoer would be owed 90% of his remaining salary if fired, which would be more than $60 million in buyout payments. But beyond that, a former Tide quarterback believes NIL money could be a problem for Alabama regardless of the coach.

"Another thing that hurts Alabama right now is you look at these other teams that have $40-50 million in NIL," AJ McCarron said Monday on the McCready and Siskey podcast. "Alabama -- and I know this for a fact talking to multiple people inside the program -- Alabama has got less than $20 million in their NIL."

Continued McCarron: "You know what helps Alabama from a recruiting standpoint? It's the fact that Alabama has been Alabama, and people go there because they know you're going to be able to compete for national championships, year-in and year-out. And you're gonna go into the NFL, most likely, if you do what you're supposed to do.

"If you start losing, all of that goes away. And now you can't pay guys what other schools are dishing out? Now it hurts you even more. I don't care who you have as a coach -- whether Coach Saban, Coach DeBoer, it doesn't matter."

Why does Alabama have less NIL money than, say, lsu or Georgia?

I am just so tired and finding it hard to care anymore. Alabama is struggling with NIL and my electric bill is doubling to pay for AI data centers.

To be fair, I don’t buy for one moment that any of these collectives have as much money as they say they do nor do I believe they should exist to begin with anyways.

AJ is right but that isn’t anything new. We have a lot of rich boosters but we don’t have that many “wealthy” boosters that can just throw millions at NIL. We survived because we had Saban and kids were willing to take an NIL paycut to play for him and get the exposure & path to the NFL. With him gone, the hope was we would continue to be a Top 5 or 10 team and players who grew up seeing the dynasty would still come to Alabama due the brand. If we have a losing season or two, that brand equity gets stripped away and we’re stuck with an NIL that isn’t comparable to the other blue bloods.

Cool

So their NIL budget is the same as their recruiting budget over the last 15 years

Nobody went to bama to win college championships. they went there bc they got paid and bc they believed it would help them get to the NFL.

Please, bama set the standard for spending $$ on the football program before the NIL when they added about 75 “analysts” to their staff.
Saban is a great coach for sure, but their run was heavily aided by them spending more money on the football program than anyone else….I highly doubt they are being lapped in NIL money.

It’s almost like the NIL whales are more willing to spend when it’s Saban as opposed to DeBoer

Poor old Alabama. Who has it worse? Genuinely, they've got the sympathy of all the college football world right now.

That’s a lot of words to say the success had everything to do with Saban and nothing to do with Alabama.

Exactly the argument everyone outside of Alabama made for 15 years.

This is exactly right. As soon as Saban retired I knew they were in for a downfall. It was not matter who they hired.

you have to take in account that the price have gone up dramatically

pre nil was like $300k, Charger, free apartment for an elite 4, 5 star recruit to keep him there all 4 or 5 years

now that's possible $500,000 per season for the same guy. And you're getting into NIL bidding wars for transfers now too

LINK

Quarterback: $1 million-$2 million
Running back: $300,000-$700,000
Wide receiver: $400,000-$800,000
Edge rushers: $500,000-$1 million
Offensive tackle: $500,000-$1 million
Linebackers: $200,000-$500,000
Cornerbacks: $300,000-$800,000
Safeties: $300,000-$700,000
