Last week 6 boats fishing recreational tarpon near chandeleur island were interrupted by two menhaden (pogey) boats. The ships steamed in between the tarpon boats where they were hailed on VHF and informed there was a large number of tarpon feeding on the pogeys. The pogey boat captain responded that they did not see any tarpon and neither did the spotter plane. They proceeded to drop their net boats and encircle the entire pogey school, capturing and kill tarpon as well.

The result can be seen in the photos below posted by one of the tarpon fishermen to Facebook. The tarpon in the net died. They also reported a tarpon ended up on the deck of one of net boats. The fishermen reported seeing several tarpon in the pogey net that were in bad shape, doubtful if they lived or not.

These guys do not care about their impact on our coast, capturing as much menhaden as possible is the goal regardless of bycatch or impact on others. Even when it was clearly communicated that their net would not only disturb the tarpon fishermen, but that it could catch the tarpon, they proceeded anyway. That should tell you all you need to know about the self-important mentality of the industry. They share the water with recreational anglers but act as though they are entitled to it more than the rest of us. We dont need people like this operating in our community.

People in LA only care about the coast when it is time to exploit it.

I have a strong feeling these boats aren't from Louisiana.

Sure he will.

He will go to his millionaire buddies camp in GI, get on a multi million dollar fishing vessel, and explain how we need to save the coast after he just canceled the MBSD and allows pogie boat to screw the coast.

Its seasonal work also, they only fish during the summer. Anyone who claims it's an economic benefit to the state to have these jobs is either lying or ignorant. Recreational fishing and the coastal tourism economy as a whole is many times greater impact to our GDP.

The pogey boats never do anything wrong. The study said so.

We are the only backwards arse state that allows these parasites into state waters.

They need to be 10 miles offshore, at least, and the tonnage they take needs to be regulated. They need a season. They are allowed to flat out rape our coast.

yeah for the last 100 years. Anybody with any stoke in this state would gladly pull it further into the sewer as long as they get to take a shower after.

Once again, corruption plagues this state from every square inch.

Will the people ever win in this crap?

Would like to know how many vermilion parish residents work in the industry.
Most of the people I have seen on the strike boats looked like parolees from Angola.
Summer of 1984 I worked on a shell rig at south Tim 300 and watched the fleet hammer Pogie all summer. I guess they caught all of the offshore Pogie and are on the beaches for the balance today.
We hate on our north La kin but they are the key to putting pressure on those in the DNR. Typically the N La legis go along to get along on S La issues.
Grass roots from North to South is our only hope to stop this carnage.

There hasn't been a tarpon caught/seen in that area since the pogy boats did this.

For those that dont know--tarpon stage on very select areas of the coast; as in there are 5-6 places to catch/see tarpon between Cat and Grand Isle (albeit some are caught here and there as the Tarpon are transitioning). The tarpon stage in these spots to feed on storm minnow and pogys.

The pogy boat setting directly on top of the first place Tarpon stop when they hit the Louisiana Boundry is awful and the spot likely will not recover until next year's migration. (Although I hope I am wrong)

The lack of common courtesy of the Pogy Boats to other Charter Fisherman/Rec. Fisherman, along with refusing the warning from 6 boats that Tarpon were in the area is angering.

Jeff Landry
Joseph Orgeron
Pat Connick

These 3 are pretty much single handedly keeping these foreign owned boats in business, shockingly, they all receive campaign contributions (and no telling what other grift) from Omega and Daybrook. It’s amazing what a key placement on the right committees can do to ensure business as usual in this Third World state.

Self interest over the interests of the greater good is typical of most politicians, Lousiana has it honed to a fine point, and has for many decades.

As much as I love going to Venice, I can't help but get sick to my stomach when I cross the bridge and see those giant floating vessels of despair, corruption, and exploitation in Empire.
