I'm an old timer and lived and died by LSU football outcomes in the 60's and early 70's!

At that time, the LSU Defense was the best in the nation and I remember the pundits talking about how undersized, yet quick, the LSU Defense was! The 1970 defense was incredible! In a time where passing game innovation was stilll being developed, you had to run the ball..LSU excelled...They held opponents to around 50 yards a game....I went to every game knowing we could win based on our defense. The fans loved the defense. They were known as a swarming defense with gang tackling!
I saw that Saturday night....we are not underized now, but damn, the first sack by Woodard, the play of Weeks, and Perkins being shot out of a cannon on the last of Clemson's offensive series gave me flashbacks of LSU dominance on defnese!
Offense sells the seats, but defense wins championships, and what I saw on Saturday, was a flashback to LSU dominance in defense...I love it

I remember…..
Anderson, Casanova. Cashio, Bevan and all.
Every time there was a tackle there were about eight LSU helmets around the ball.

Am an aged one as well and I truly enjoyed the play of LSU's Defense on Saturday evening....I don't see a missing piece - not one.

Right there with you....I saw every one of them play in person. This year's defense will begin to remind me of those defenses if they keep up the aggressive gang tackling.

Speed is the name of the game. We have that now at every level.

A lot of the 1970 team are still in Baton Rouge and very prominent business men

OG here too and most of these mfetrs have no clue who the Chinese Bandits were or the 6-3 game, etc.
Yeah we got beat by the bear almost every year during the Charlie Mac years etc etc but historically LSU has been known for being a physical hard hitting top-notch defense above everything else. That's how we win. We made some bad hires but we have our guy now 0P. Go check out the link where some pundit went through Coach Bakers calls. He maybe the highest paid DC in the country but he is still unpaid. Baker is not only the best DC’s in college football but maybe best period.
After that time out he set up a play that completely fooled Kubick and sent him right into Harold Perkins arms. That was all by design. Baker is a genius. Pate said in his analysis he forgot how good Baker really is, (and Austin), and he talked about Baker doing a film study with him when he said, “Coach looks like you are squeezing every little bit of talent you can out of these players” to which he replied “Thank you for noticing”
Great Attacking Defense is as LSU as Mike the tiger. Just like playing your arse off and never giving up.

It's a return to Old School Traditional Kick arse LSU Defense.
Thanks to Kyle "Smaller, but more active & athletic DL's" Williams, Jack Pyburn and Whit Weeks for the sudden transformation.
Salutations to Blake Baker for overseeing the operation and for moving Perkins to Star.........

I am right there with you in age, and this team has the potential to go all the way. They will have to earn it every week. I am going to enjoy this season regardless! Go Tigers!!

That’s pretty interesting! Who that you know is still around in BR?

I was there in late 60's early 70's. Ronnie Estay was one of those a little undersized but with an incredible motor. Great player too.

Yep - that was an LSU Defense especially in the 2nd half.

I was 11 in 1958, when we moved back to BR, after Dad’s military service. He had played in the GBTL. He took my brothers and I to the home games.
What I remember, was the swarming defense of the Chinese Bandits. For those not that familiar, the Bandits were really just 3rd string players. New rules allowed for unit platooning, and Deitzel took advantage.
The Bandits played like their hair was on fire. As defensive “specialist”, and 3rd stringers they shared time with the first string D, the 1st stringer two way players, the White Team. So, when they got their chances, they went all out. Gang tackling was their style. They won fan support by their hustle. Then the band would play the song, now famously played to this day after a big stop. “ Gonna stop a touchdown, CHOP, CHOP”. I remember reading comments by opposing players the “they play like wild animals”. They became fan favorites when early in the season, the opponent was driving against the White Team and needed a breather (having just played offense). The Bandits made a goal line stand of several plays from the1yard line. CHOP, CHOP.
It’s my belief, that that style of play became established at LSU. I think Coach Charlie Mac deserves credit. He was the coach of the D in the 58 season, and then became Head Coach.
It still gives me chills to hear that song as my Tiger D runs off the field.
