Wonder how many German SS soldiers refused to kill during Holocaust.

I know from what we always see most were probably hardened soldiers and may not have cared. Surely many developed PTSD, but curious if there were many who refused to do the killings.

The Wehrmacht wasn’t the Boy Scouts.

If you failed to follow orders they shot you or sent you into a minefield to clear mines which amounts to the same thing.

They probably didn't last long if they refused to play their part. Good question, though!

There is a book about one of the execution squads. Also, the Stanford experiment shows how normal people can do bad things.

He bled the Russians pretty much down to nothing.

This is what you’re thinking about on Labor Day?

You must be fun at parties.

At least not at first.
But by 1942 operation Reinhard pumped up the killing a lot. In nazi pov, this was more important than winning the war. Really crazy shite. Bloodlust.

They had the SS and kill squads to do the really nasty work but yeah if your Sergeant told you to shoot some prisoners they were getting shot and no one was really concerned what you thought about it.

To be objective the Soviets weren’t taking many prisoners either.

The eastern front was about as nasty as war gets.

In the SS, none. In the Wermacht, probably a small percentage. The Germans developed the gas chambers because indiscriminate shooting of prisoners was taking a mental toll on the SS.

Plus they figured out giving your army meth helps alleviate some of the guilt or indecisiveness.

Well, the only person more cruel than hitler was Stalin.
Much less when you’re invaded and fail.

Recommended reading, although it’s not always the easiest thing to read.

Why would they? It was a prestigious appointment, and the job they applied for was killing.

Revisionist history is a hell of a drug.

It was only 40 years ago, US recruits sung Jodie’s about napalming children, and wreaking havoc.

Today, you’re getting a mental health evaluation if you mention that you joined the military to kill people.
