Was anyone upset originally when Damian Lewis got cast as Dick Winters?

He’s one of the most American people of all time and he got played by a Brit, did anyone get upset when that happened?

Obviously he mastered the part and I can’t imagine anyone else playing it, but it is funny to me that he’s not even American. Blew my freaking mind the first time I heard him talk in his regular voice

Also, half the cast of Blackhawk down are foreigners. Not sure anyone was upset about that either.

I had no idea he was British until I got the DVD set and saw the behind the scenes. He was unknown at the time.

You can hear his accent come out on rewatches, but at the time no one knew or cared. Hell, like half the cast were Brits. Maybe more.

I think that was the week after my Premiere magazine subscription expired.

So no.

When I saw Minority Report, it introduced me to an obvious rising American star with good looks & a flawless American accent, Colin Farrell (who then took the lead role in both Phone Booth and The Recruit).

Two years later, I see Farrell do an interview for his upcoming role in Daredevil and discovered he owns one of thickest Irish accents around. I was absolutely blown away. That same year, I saw Damian Lewis in a follow-up role to Band of Brothers in Dreamcatcher and heard his Brit accent. It was also striking.

But it was Farrell that initially made aware of the casting deceptions oft-used in Hollywood, so Lewis' wasn't as shocking. It was more pattern-revealing.

No, but now when we rewatch Band of Brothers, I see Brody from Homeland.

Leibgott wasn’t Jewish.

Not the actor, the actual person.

It’s not like people were into who was playing in stuff before it came out back in those days. Also, TV stuff grew in popularity as time went on. 9/11 happened right as it premiered so it was kind of overshadowed for a while. By the time people realized it was special, Lewis was Winters to every one. He owned that part.

There’s probably 100 examples I could think of for this in an hour.

The deception? You mean your youthful ignorance of an actor's background. Farrell being Irish was not a secret then, and the information was not hidden from you.

It’s called “acting”.

You should look in to it. People pretend to be someone else. Then they say things they didn’t think up. They will even pretend to be married to total strangers.

Crazy stuff man.

The only sure thing is that nowadays Damien Lewis would not be cast as Dick Winters as Lewis is a ginger.

If an actor can pull it off then more power to them. Carla Jean Moss in No Country was played by Kelly Macdonald who is Scottish and did a great job.
