Glacier National Park - Staying Within Park Req's

Hey everyone - we're planning a trip to GNP for next September. We're in the process of deciding where we should stay and for how long and I'm looking for recommendations.
Our hope is to stay within the park. My understanding is that lodging within the park itself opens one year in advance, so we plan to call on September 1st, 2025 for a booking in September, 2026.
My thought right now is to fly in on August 31st and spend the first night in Whitefish and then make the drive to Many Glacier on the September 1st and stay there for four nights. Then make the drive to Lake McDonald Lodge and stay there for four nights and then come home. Thoughts?
I've also thought about breaking the Lake McDonald portion in half and spending two nights there and another two nights elsewhere, but I'm not sure.
Any recommendations are appreciated! Would love to hear the must-do hikes and eats as well!
Thank you in advance!!!

I’ve been told to get Agpar a night of 2 and Many Glacier a couple of nights.

Is Agpar worth going to or just stay on the east side?

it was way less crowded on the east side and obviously less crowded at many glacier. But we did drive thru lake McDonald lodge and apgar village on our last day and they both looked very cool. The lodge looks like scout summer camp (in a good way) and apgar has shops, restaurants, stuff like that. If you go with kids both places would be lots of fun for them

We'll definitely stay here - is four nights to much? We're struggling on where to stay on the west side. We'd prefer to just stay in one place for four nights, but we're open to breaking it up into two, two night stays in different parts of the park if that is best.
I appreciate the trip report link - looks awesome!

quote:many glacier road is a dead end...you cant get to going to the sun road (and the rest of the park) from there unless you go all the way back to st mary. 2 nights at many glacier is what we did and it was perfect...the trails around there and swiftcurrent are must-hikes, and unless you are backpacking or long distance hiking you cant access them from the rest of the park. so stay there (it is drop dead gorgeous), knock out those hikes (again, a must), then relocate.

get you a good trail map of the park and plan your stays/days around the hikes you want to do. less driving, more hiking

Apgar is pretty damn amazing. We've stayed twice and would absolutely stay there again.
View from our room.
View from another stay from the front porch. Blocked out the kids braving the cold water.

just booked a couple nights at many glacier for july next year. we planned a little late and it was all booked up but we stalked the website multiple times per day and some availability opened up. if your dates are a little flexible, the website will show you availability for all the glacier park hotels/stays for the entire month on one page and you can plan from there.

I'm not a national park enthusiest, its just kind of boring to me, but with that said, I did spend a week in Whitefish in July and we made 2 trips into the park during our stay. It's only a 30 minute drive from White Fish to the West entrance. We spent one day touring Lake McDonald area and another on Going to the Sun. It was not packed at all and we did see a good bit of wildlife. A few "small" Grizzleys, a lynx and a Mtn Goat scaling a rock wall were some of hte hilights.
