With the US Open currently taking place in Flushing Meadows, it got me to wondering - when i was a kid growing up in the 80s & 90s, guys like McEnroe and Agassi and Sampras were a big deal, and most of us would watch them at Wimbledon and the like, then go out to the neighborhood courts and hit around, etc… Can anyone explain why now, at least in America- tennis is looked at as some fru-fru country club sport, whereas golf- the ultimate country club sport- is not ? Also, why does it seem like pickleball, of all things, is more “acceptable” these days than tennis- when pickleball is basically a fat, lazy person’s version of tennis, and tennis requires WAY more skill and athleticism than pickleball ? Personally im of the opinion that we need an American men’s tennis version of Tiger Woods…. But explain it to me like i am 6, and please try to be specific .. InB4 “Soccer board”

I am old enough to remember when Real Men[tm] like Selleck and Schwarzenegger and Eastwood played in tennis tournaments .

I’ve been playing tennis for decades. It’s not easy to learn, takes a good year to get consistent, but once you got it you won’t forget the basics.
It’s a tough sport for a bunch of lazy folks these days. About the only sport you can play with any other age, family , etc. that is unthought of.

pickleball is easier. Simple as that.

Pickleball is about accessibility. Accessibility for (insert reason). Age, knees, affordability, community, and so on.

I recognize this as someone who has never tried pickleball and have no desire to.

Caddyshack made golf seem fun and not stodgy. Happy Gilmore followed suit but there would be no Happy Gilmore without Caddyshack.

Has there ever been a tennis movie?

ETA the average guy thinks he could be pretty good at walking around hitting a ball. It looks easy and fun. Chasing a ball around a tennis court looks harder and a lot less fun.

There was that Wimbledon movie but I think it was an origin story for Vision from the MCU

That actually makes it more confusing , not simpler- at least insofar as the affordability component .. when comparing to golf, tennis is much cheaper to get into b/c all you need is a second-hand racquet.. with golf you need clubs, green fees and more .

I like the cadence of tennis better. Tennis gives you a little time to think about where to position the ball next.

Pickleball has nearly no time between when you hit the ball and it's coming back at you. I actually think it may be more prone to injury because your ankles are constantly darting around.

US hasn't had a dominant tennis player since Sampras.

We've had plenty in golf since then.

Stars attract people to play, so golf has been king for the past 20+ years.

Pickleball always seems like tennis on crack to me. I know it's supposed to be easier but it seems so ridiculous

Golf is the ultimate country club sport, rivaled only by squash

Have you seen the average American?

Elite level tennis is something few can play. Pickleball is easier to learn and still requires a lot of strategy and quick reactions. I played tennis in high school but I play pickleball now. It takes about 3 months to get up to speed in pickleball if you already have athletic skills. McEnroe, Agassi, Graf, and Lendl all play pickleball now.

I will say that Pro Pickleball will never be a threat to Pro Tennis. Pickleball is to Tennis what Rec Softball is to Baseball. More access to more people and especially older people. It’s a Godsend for retired men to keep them active and socializing.

Fletch was an amazing piece of cinema that featured a great deal of solid tennis scenes in his pursuit of Gale Stanwyk.

Put it on the Underhill's tab.

There's still a lot of recreational tennis players that play on public courts, not just country clubs. According to Google there are 25.7 million tennis players in the US and there have been 5 consecutive years of growth.

Pickleball on the other hand, has experienced explosive growth in recent years. It is obviously a much easier sport than tennis.

I dont know, it seems like ive known many older people who continue to play tennis well into old age.. it’s one reason i picked up tennis a few years ago (before pickleball really became a big thing) , since tennis is known as a lifetime sport .. Hell, i remember circa 20 years ago seeing Dick Van Dyke walking into a hotel lobby in Santa Monica where i was waiting to meet someone.. he’d just come from a tennis game, dressed in the all whites, and that would mean he was about 80 yrs old at that time.. that’s a true story .. just one example of course, but someone most of us over 40 would know .

If any of y’all are oldheads like me and you know who Johnny Carson is, i recently saw an ep of Johnny Carson on one of those retro channels where Chevy Chase was the first guest (i think promoting Vacation ?).. for some reason he walked out with a then state of the art Prince Boron racquet, which famously retailed back then for $500 …. It wasn’t a funny segment at all, but fascinating from a cultural/tennis perspective, and also $500 was a pretty big chunk of change for a tennis racquet in 1983 .

I had never heard of pickleball until I moved to SWFL, where we host the *insert name of highest PB championship*. I thought people were joking, because of the name. I suck at tennis (too much running for someone who considered a 72' 6" vault runway long enough ) Of your three, I pick laying on the beach.
