For people who know X’s and O’s, what do we do with Perkins

One of the big questions is ‘will Perk be effective at star’. Several pundits and film guys have been breaking this down, and the general outlook is if Clemson runs a 3x1, 5 wide set, it’ll force LSU to either
- put Perk on a WR and have him in pass coverage most of the game
- if we choose to keep perk close to the LOS in those looks, the overtop safety will have to pick up coverage, forcing us into a predictable single high shell
So for the guys who know film, what are some things Blake Baker can do against Clemson to keep Perk close to the LOS without forcing us into a predictable cover 1 coverage?

If they go 5 wide, we could rotate in another DB and have him play LB.
But this is the mystery of his use. He’s too small to rush or blitz every play and he got washed away in run fits at LB. Hopefully Baker figures out an effective way to use him consistently.

Just because Perk is playing the star position does not mean that he is going to go man-on-man with a receiver. Our coaches know their roster very well and know how good their receivers are.
Perk is going to bef lining up all over the field in that "star" position. He will play in coverage in the trail position/flats/hook. But hes also going to blitzing off the edge, spying the QB, and man on the running back. He has shown the ability to cover tight ends in space so he might even go man on man with a tight end at times.
But when in 2 and 3rd and long packages when we bring in an actual nickle he will line up on the edge or in a spy/middle position. Putting him in the star spot allows us to do things with him on early downs (predictable run plays) to get him in space to blitz or wreak havoc in the backfield.
However, he will not be lining up man on man with their receivers despite him playing the star.

Not trying to be a smart mouth and honestly asking this question...how many times last season was Major Burns isolated or asked to cover a WR man to man? I would imagine not much. And I'd have to think HP could play a short zone or cover a TE/RB as good as or better than Burns.

I'm no guru but I think the disguise of what Perk is doing is a big part of the scheme. Clubnik will look for Perk pre-snap and they'll try to guess his move. He might be lined up on a receiver and blitz from the edge. Next play in that formation he does cover that receiver. We'll be harder to predict this way in my opinion

seeing that Baker has put him in that position common sense tells me they are doing that bc that is the best way to use him. It will cause issues for the line and backs bc they won't know where he is lining up causing blocking scheme issues.

I’m admittedly nervous about him out in coverage. I could see a team honing in on that matchup and taking advantage. Hopefully they disguise the coverages well on D

Perkins can only do what the DL allows him to do. If our DE's can avoid rushing themselves out of the play and the DT's can put some pressure up the middle, it will help Perk be able to keep his eye on the QB. My thought/hope is Baker is able to use him make Klubnik uncomfortable all game long.

Perkins is great in coverage. I don’t know why anyone would be concerned about him back there

Baker is going to have packages to move Perk around. He isn't going to be in a static spot. He will have to play coverage at times and he's actually decent at it. You'll see him in trail techniques and match concepts on underneath coverages. He will almost always have a safety over the top of him in those situations. The offense isn't going to be able to force us into a single high shell by using pass heavy formations. They would have to go the heavier packages to do that.

Sober up. No one is that good.
I’m hoping Perkins has a good, full season. Dreaming about him bring a combo of Mathieu and Queen is absurd.
