Starting off by saying I know next to nothing about this kind of thing but I'm looking to possibly update my nephews PC gaming rig with a new graphics card possibly for the holidays. Just wondering what the newest top of the line card is. Also, looking to spend around $1,000. I think he has an AMD card now. I assume you could either stay with AMD or swap to Nvidia? I know his setup has a 1,000 watt PSU. Any help would be appreciated!

Nvidia 5090 - $3k if you're lucky (ETA: I keed, but $2200 is almost a "steal" at this point)

If you're buying new, the sweet spot is probably either an AMD 9070 XT (which I just built around last month) or Nvidia's 5070 TI both in the $700 to $1k range at the point.

Realistically, an examination of his entire build might be necessary. How old is the CPU/MB, for example, but IMHO you're in the 9070 XT or 5070 TI pathway now. The 5080 and 5090 are out of your budget.

The PhysX stuff scares me away from buying a 50 series. I am hoping that gets worked out before I need to update my GPU.

Another thing is he has a 32" curved Alienware free sync monitor. Are there any significant advantages to staying with an AMD card with this monitor or is it not really a big deal to use an Nvidia card with a free sync monitor? And the current graphics card is an XFX Speedster Merc 310. Thank you guys for the help!

Seen several 5080s on Slickdeals right at $1k lately

Make sure the monitor is gsync compatible or you'll lose VRR.

Assuming you're talking about a 7900XTX, you're not talking about much of an upgrade, unless he's playing games with heavy RT and pathtracing. Although, dlss 4 is very nice over fsr3 tho. al If you do go this route, wait for the 24gb supers to come out, if he has a 4k monitor, you're only getting 16gb of vram with the current ones.

My 9070xt is a beast, and it's relatively inexpensive. You'll save a few hundred dollars from your $1k budget.

I've been impressed so far. I haven't pushed it beyond some time in Cyberpunk 2077. It's handled most things like a champ.

I'm never paying $2200 to $3000 for a GPU, Mr. Nvidia if you're listening.

I never buy current generation of anything for a computer. I'm still rocking an RTX 3070. Never had issues with any game.

Yeah I couldn't imagine wasting that with todays state of games. Too many better things to spend on.

9070XT isn't a bad card, but I am still going to recommend spending a little more and getting the 5070ti.

The Nvidia card is going to have better ray tracing performance which will continue to be more important as new games that require it get released. Also Nvidia has a better upscaler and frame generation technology compared to the AMD equivalent.

But someone else will.

I'm very happy with my 9060 too.
