Mickey Loomis is historically good

Mickey Loomis is not now (nor has he ever been) the guy selecting rosters for the Saints.
That complaint is ignorant.
What has he actually done as GM of the Saints?
1. He is one of the early adapters of cap manipulation. Nobody in the NFL was as good as the Saints at being over the cap by 80 million dollars and still keeping players.
2. He got there to extend the window for Brees to win another Super Bowl. Everyone knew the game plan and everyone knew what would happen when it was over. And he almost succeeded if not for the NFL opting to put its new LA team in the Super Bowl instead.
3. He presided over the Saints going from laughingstock to respectable player on a yearly basis.
The hate is weird.
Are there better GMs? I’m sure.
Are there worse? Ask Cleveland fans. The Panthers traded their future for a guy who’s 5’9” and throws like a girl.
Get a grip, Twitter. I mean, Saints Talk.

I just feel like a full rebuild should’ve happened no later than 2022, to still be holding on to a nonexistent championship window is insane

The hate is warranted. He should have started the rebuild years ago and still has his head in the sand about this roster and Dennis Allen. Takes zero accountability for the situation we’re in and blames our lack of success injuries as if we’re the only team who has them

Ireland/KM deserve just as much critisizm as Mickey IMO. They are both responsible for any moves/decisions made with respect to the Saints organization. Not just on one person. Not sure who is making the major push on these decisions. Could be Ireland/KM and then Mickey just makes it happen more or less. Either way all 3 are involved as well as the bone headed owner. Same when Sean was here.

Loomis and Haz ran a terrible team. If I remember correctly Loomis had much more control over the team than in the CSP years. Maybe my memory sucks lol

You could have just said he signed Brees. The cap manipulation “worked” because of Brees and we were no longer a laughing stock because of Brees
Brees has been gone since after 2020. That’s 4 seasons worth of ball - we are 30-38 since then. Thats 17% of his tenure here. Add the three 7-9s and that’s 30%. You can argue whose fault it is but at the end of the day it falls on the GM to make the right hires and to dictate the direction of the team. Can’t change the future but they need to correct it fast

He should have been fired with the rest of the Haslett regime.
Brees hasn’t played in 4 seasons, yet they still continued to operate as if they were a contender.
He hired Allen & sighed Derek Carr with the idea they still had a chance to go for it. Along with the Chris Olave trade, these 3 things have been the most detrimental decisions this franchise has been burdened with post-Brees. Not only have they wasted 4 seasons playing in their own shite, they have set back many future seasons down the line.
At the end of the day, this has always been Loomis. He just had Payton & Brees to cover him for years, and also to make him look great when things did strike.

I also don’t make the claim that ML is primarily responsible for the success during Brees’ years here.
But he certainly didn’t blow it like I’ve seen other GMs do when they have a good thing.
Side tangent: I had lots of fun watching the Saints during the Haslett years. They had some good players and teams and literally collapsed under the weight of a flooded city and organization. I’m glad it ended and I think Haslett was not a good coach, but I put the birth of the Saints as a professionally run sports organization and not clown show at 2000, not 2006 as most seemingly do.

Is he not the GM? If his only job is negotiating contracts and regulating the cap then why are the Saints in such a hell hole? Why the terrible contracts?

Your memory does suck. Loomis started in 2000 as the team’s Director of Football Administration. He was basically the organization’s accountant. Randy Mueller was GM and handled personnel. Rick Mueller took over personnel in 2002 after Randy got fired.
ML’s role, whether you agree with the strategy or not, has always been to massage the cap. Which he did better than anybody for years.
When is the last time you remember a great Saint getting let go for solely salary reasons when they still had upside?
The popular answer will be Trey Hendrickson. I would remind you that the Saints had the best defensive line in the NFL when that happened and a wealth of talent. Remember when the Saints went 3 years without allowing a 100 yard rusher? It was a position of surplus at the time.

I've seen the Saints scouting Department catch some crap for the drafting recently but I couldn't help but notice the reaction in the war room right after the Kelvin Banks pick.
For what it's worth, this is nothing against Banks. But unlike all the other rooms where it looked like everybody was on the same page and high-fiving each other, the Saints war room was not.
Besides, they were absolutely correct on Trey Hendrickson and Zach Baun. Hell even Marcus Davenport was a really good player but he just always got hurt. Marcus Williams was a pretty good safety, but most people will just remember that one tackle he missed against the Vikings.
I do think that drafting. Jake Harner was obviously a wasted pic. At least it looks like it. I mean dude. Stop throwing that f****** rugby ball around on the sideline
The fact is the Saints don't really have much of a draft history when it comes to quarterbacks
Brees was a free agent and so was Jeff Blake. Aaron Brooks came in a trade from the Packers.
Shough has a good arm and I really love that throw that he made to Welch the other day. But the reason I have concern about him is because of all the injuries he's already suffered and because of his age.
I'm saying when you group those two factors together injuries plus age. That's what I'm looking at. If he wasn't so injury prone I wouldn't give a shite about how old he was.
Loomis just strikes me as a guy that is not held accountable by anyone and some of the s*** that he says in his press conference is laughable.

Time has passed Mickey by. He was a damn good GM but it’s time to move on.

He is Responsible for hiring and firing personnel people, as well as the coaches. The Saints and Pels have sucked for years. He hires his friends(Dumars and Ireland), and wont fire them- HE SUX!!!!!

Mickey Loomis is going to be in the Hall of Fame as an General Manager. If you take out Al Davis and Jerry Jones as GMs since they also own the team, and Bill Belichick, there are only 3 GMs in history that have won more games than him. We can bitch all we want about him but he was able to keep the Saints relevant for two decades.
Mickey Loomis All Time Wins
And the line drawn from 2002 to now says this: with Sunday’s 28-6 victory over Carolina, Loomis has been general manager of the Saints for 200 regular-season wins in the NFL.
Since the NFL was founded in 1920, only seven men previously have held the title of general manager and accumulated 200 wins on their watch in the modern era: Al Davis, 409 wins as owner/general manager of the Raiders from 1966-2011; Bill Belichick, 265 wins as coach/general manager of the Patriots since 2000; Jerry Jones, 265 wins as owner/general manager of the Cowboys since 1989; Tex Schramm, 250 wins as general manager of the Cowboys from 1960-88; Bill Polian, 229 wins as general manager of the Bills (1986-92), Panthers (1995-97) and Colts (1998-2009); Kevin Colbert, 226 wins as pro personnel director/general manager of the Steelers from 2000-21; and Ozzie Newsome, 200 wins as executive vice president/GM of the Ravens from 1996-2018.
