You think any of these guys are going to become NFL starting caliber QBs all of a sudden? Highly unlikely.

Starting the Season with Rattler, then Working in Seaux, when we keep stacking up Ls isnt a bad plan.
The saints needed a QB incase Rattler got hurt. Seaux seemed like the right fit for the KM offense. To groom a backup.

Possibly…we seem to have been stuck in the doldrums like the mid 1990’s since Drew left.
We tried getting a big veteran name fill some shoes, but that backfired, now they are trying young talent to develop their own system, but that will probably backfire too.
The one thing that amazes me sometimes is we draft decent players, but they either get stuck with the injury bug or see little playing time while they are a Saint. Then they move on through free agency or a botched trade where they become a break out player on another squad and the player we get sits the bench and is dead weight on the salary cap.

And I think he's gonna blow it, probably with check downs and overly conservative play, holding the ball too long and taking sacks.

In my mind, check downs are a mark of maturity in not forcing it and creating turnovers. It's also often a mark of lack of open receivers, which a QB can't help.
Conservative play can be a mark of maturity, a matter of directive from the coach (especially in preseason), or lack of open receivers.

I have not seen this from Rattler, not as a characteristic. To the contrary, he has a great sense of the pocket and has been very crafty in getting away from pressure and scrambling for positive yardage.

Rattler has shown the most so far. He’s the lowest draft pick out of the 3, so he’s earned every snap he can get

I think rattler is better currently, and honestly, i dont think its that close

Well to you what are the stats he needs for him to have played well?

quote:OK, my OP was admittedly a little troll-y, but you can't be serious about this. Did you watch him last year? What was it, like 6 sacks against the Broncos? Didn't he just take 3 sacks against the Chargers a couple weeks ago? Every analyst I listen too complains he holds on to the ball too long. And I'm not saying Shough is better at this, he's showing some of the same worrisome tendencies.

This is one of his best traits.
Dude has shown time and time again his pocket presence is really great, which really allows him to extend plays.
Maybe they are waiting for him to pick up the rest. They actually got him some WR help this year and we will see what he can do with the starting WRs for the Saints. Last year he was playing with Practice squad players and a decimated O-Line.
Seaux is in a great postion, bc he makes more than Rattler and if Rattler makes mistakes his number gets called. Seaux has all tanglibles, but hasnt shown the instnicts they hoped for in his "short" sample we have seen him play.

Rattler really needs to do a lot to distance himself from Shough. So far they are neck and neck and I would think that makes a case for Shough.

The only way for any of the qbs to truly separate themselves from the others is by doing it in several regular season games.

I don't put much stock into media pundits. And it's a little half and half last year. He played with second string receivers and OL, having a couple of really good and a couple of really not good games.
But this is the current year. To this point, I can recall one sack, the strip sack because the third string tackle immediately let the defensive end right around to Rattler. I know there was at least one more, but sacks happen. May have been more, but again this is with second and beyond string ol and receivers. My impression is he's gone to check downs (which indicates that if he's holding the ball it's because no one is open) and moved away from pressure well. Again, we haven't pass blocked well. I can't say that's Rattler holding the ball too long so much as pressure is immediate.
It's kinda 6 in one hand, half a dozen in the other. Idk, we'll see again today. I like how he escapes pressure, ultimately. Reminds of Mahomes.

I'm not even trying to drag the guy, but some of ya'll are living in an alternate reality. Talk to a South Carolina fan, please. Just because he takes off running, doesn't mean he has good pocket presence. There's a reason he was a 5th round pick. Literally the first thing I found googling "Spenser Rattler pocket presence ":
quote:LINK
Rattler seems to have a persistent issue with anticipating or identifying pressure. He consistently seems surprised by pass rushers and at times never recognizes the potential for a blitz. He has limited pocket presence and has issues navigating the pocket. While it’s improved a bit at South Carolina, Rattler has a tendency to either escape the pocket early, not escape when he should, or not recognize when he needs to go to a hot read.

A true starting NFL quarterback has to be able to pass from the pocket consistently.

As long as it's entertaining whether that looks real bad or good I don't care at this point.
