I havent been since I was a kid, and I didn't really appreciate it. My wife has never been. Our kid is obsessed with presidents and US history and whatnot, much more so than when I was a kid, so I know he'll definitely enjoy it.

What are some tips on where to stay, which airport, areas to avoid, food, or is it pretty basic and just Google the top ten things to do?

National Air and Space museum is a must for kids.
Veitnam wall, Korean War, and WWII memorials, Lincoln Statue. Depending on the age of the kids the changing of the guard at the tomb of the unknown. Or at least let them see the guard doing his march/procession not sure the technical term.

Spy museum depending on their interests. The natural history one is good as well. Bring a backpack with snacks or even sandwiches and water.

Halocaust museum is likely too much for kids unless they are older.

Get metro passes and explore. Its clean, on time, and safe.

The night tour of the monuments is so cool. We were there in January one year I believe and it snowed on the tour. I'll always remember that.

I like to stay at the Willard, a beautiful and historic hotel about a block from the White House.
There are lots of gourmet and ethnic restaurants in Washington, but your son would probably like the Old Ebbits Grill, another historic place about a block behind the Willard.

I would highly recommend Filomena Ristorante in Georgetown if you like Italian. The food/service was great.

Try to stay as close to a Metro station as possible. The trains can get you anywhere the city. Last time I went we stayed in Rockville/Shady Grove MD and caught the red line in each morning.

I haven't been since '98, but you could honestly fill most of your trip and never leave the Smithsonian. If your kid is really into US history then the American History museum is a must.

Also at least a brief time in Air & Space (most renovations should be done) to see the Wright Flyer, Spirit of St. Louis, and Apollo 11 command module. Also there is the Satellite campus at Dulles with a space shuttle, SR-71, and the Enola Gay.

Walk the mall and see the WW2, Korea, and Vietnam memorials. I don't think the WW1 memorial is complete yet. Visit Lincoln and Jefferson memorials. If you have time climb Washington.

White House (and I think Capitol) tours have to be booked in advance via your congressman or senator.

The last time I was there, the Archives building had a quick walk by display in the rotunda with original copies of the Declaration, Constitution, and Bill of Rights.

There is a Hampton Inn at the King Street metro station in Alexandria Virginia. Trust em, stay there. It is right next to the metro which will take you anywhere and Alexandria is a really fun town to hang out in at night. They have a free trolley that will go up and down the main street of Alexandria.

Daniel's Story is the family section, recommended for those age 8 and up, and it's excellent and well worth the time.
