What advice would you give Disney?

quote:

Cinderella and Sleeping Beauty aren’t the only ones looking for a prince.

Leadership at Walt Disney Studios has been pressing Hollywood creatives in recent months, multiple sources tell Variety, for movies that will bring young men back to the brand in a meaningful way. “Young men” is defined here by sources as ages 13-28, aka Gen Z.

First, duh. Every film studio is looking for better ways to convert young audiences into habitual moviegoers. Numerous studies show that Gen Z men in particular are a lonely, gaming-obsessed group who were hampered in their formative years by COVID-19 lockdowns — not the easiest segment to grasp. But what’s surprising producers, writers and other partners in the larger industry is that Disney has been calling for original concepts to lure the demo back to the movies.

This is the same Disney whose multibillion-dollar content engines, Marvel and Lucasfilm, have sated men of all ages over almost two decades since the company acquired them. The sources say Disney has been seeking new IP and pitches such as splashy global adventures and treasure hunts, as well as seasonal fare like films for the Halloween corridor. The calls come as the Star Wars machine struggles to produce any film project and the superhero genre sheds audiences by the minute.

quote:

When the execution is correct, Disney’s sweet spot at the movies has been millennials. That generation rabidly consumed classic vault titles like “The Lion King,” “101 Dalmatians” and “Lilo & Stitch” as kids. Now, they bring their children in droves to see live-action reboots. (This year’s billion-dollar grosser “Lilo & Stitch” over-indexed with men and boys, Disney previously said.) Gen Z is a different story.

Built-in interest is not nearly as guaranteed for such an audience, which propelled Warner Bros.’ “A Minecraft Movie” to nearly a billion-dollar haul. That was a game Gen Z played as very small kids. Not to mention the euphoric viral moments it created for young men filming key moments inside multiplexes and sharing them on platforms like Tik- Tok. (See also Universal Pictures’ “Gentleminions” trend in 2022, when Gen Z bros packed theaters in suits and ties for “Minions: The Rise of Gru.”)

As it stands, Disney is in line with Sony Pictures and Paramount in its market share for Gen Z (10% of ticket buyers in 2024). That’s two points above Universal and two points below Warners. But Disney is not leaving the job of courting Gen Z entirely up to the film group. Concurrent to Greenbaum’s hire, the corporation bought a $1.5 billion equity stake in gaming juggernaut “Fortnite,” which will incorporate Disney’s iconic stable of characters. Two sources say Disney does not, however, enjoy movie rights to “Fortnite” itself, which would seem a no-brainer in luring Gen Z to theaters.

Imagine owning Star Wars and Marvel and being unable to appeal to males.

The problem isn't with the IP, it's with the activists they have running them.

1. Take what the have -
OT Indiana Jones
OT Star Wars

2. Remember how Hollywood made movies in the 80s and 90s

The world is not gay, trans, or woke; they are just trying to make it that way and losing money.

Take strong alpha male characters and add in pretty female actors as supporting characters. Remove social commentary that will not age and make movies about good defeating evil, it is just that simple.

If you are going to tap into video games as source material, remain true to the source material and do not try to "hollywood" it. I go back to the Tomb Raider reboot would make a kick arse movie trilogy, but the keep screwing it up. Take the games and put them to film as the games are, with the actress playing Lara true to her game figure. They got it right casting Jolie back in the day, but have not nailed the new one. A true to form GTA would be "R" rated, but make a crap ton of money.

If they are using books as source, do not waiver from source. Lord of the Rings is a perfect example. The Jackson Trilogy was near perfection, while Amazon strayed way to far and Jackson did screw up Hobbit, but I think the studios are to blame on that one. Dune is a decent example of them doing a pretty good job of doing their best to not stray as some books are very hard to adapt.

Simple version though -
Strong Men
Pretty Women
Violence/Comedy
Happy Ending.

That has worked since movies were invented.

It doesn't matter because everyone that works at these places and the contractors and subcontractors are completely devoted to the same ideological narrative of feminism, GLAAD LGBTQ inclusion, and all white males are bad/evil, climate change, victimhood as virtue etc. Etc. (Progressivism)

They cannot go in any other direction than the one they're in because they are trapped by their employees. Its not possible. Even the top levels of the corporate structure are devoted to progressivism as a core theme of their content.

How about stop kicking male roles to the back in favor of female roles or centering stories on feminist dogmas? Stop promoting mid 30s quirk chungus millennial women and shitting on traditional strength and virtue.

Its just not going to happen in a deeply progressivism corporation even if you have the perfect playbook to turn it around.

I just assumed they knew Star Wars, which was predominantly loved by 10-45 year old white males, into content that targets young progressive women was going to include leaving hundreds of millions of $$ on the table.

Its always been obvious their goal was to destroy the male characters and replace each one with a new progressive female character.

Hollywood doesnt even allow the type of people who liked OG Star Wars to get hired there anymore. Theyre probably completely filtered out before they even apply.

Everything you need to turn it around and create a new hype/energy is automatically rejected.

The progressivism disease will continue to hollow out and rot formerly great content.

Wow I can’t imagine why Gen Z men don’t want to watch stars wars or marvel anymore. Almost like alienating your core audience trying to appeal to a nonexistent female one was a bad idea for the two biggest male centric cinema universes

Thats weird since they just made a show called Andor with a male lead and they kept bringing Luke back for Mando episodes.

yep you're right. they're obviously nailing it with their male audience and should continue exactly on the path they have been down.

I had an idea for a film trilogy back when Pixar was good (Pixar hasn’t made a truly great movie since Coco) about the Singularity where a Christian girl is mortally wounded and uploaded to the Singularity against her will and seeks to escape it and free her soul. But we’re now just around the corner from the Singularity and this concept would have been more interesting a decade ago.

I still can’t believe Disney/Pixar made a Buzz Lightyear movie bomb. For the record since Toy Story’s initial release, Disney has sold more Buzz Lightyear action figures than Mickey Mouse dolls, so that should have just printed money. Lightyear should have been the boy equivalent of what Frozen is to girls, and they just ruined it.

You realize there is some room between "they are nailing it" and "they are trying to kill off every male character and replace them with a female" right?

For anyone to believe they wanted ZERO male leads while they were still putting out shows/movies with male leads is just dishonest.

Most of Disney’s classics have female leads though. This is not really the argument. Disney’s last great movie “Raya and the Last Dragon” had a female lead, and that’s not the problem (and Encanto is fine for that matter but not one of my favorites).

It’s really that you treat the characters with respect and aren’t condescending and holier than thou. Just tell a good story.

And save for becoming a Mary Sue, Rey isn’t the problem in the Star Wars trilogy. I think most of us were fine with a female lead especially after Leia and Ashoka. Plus it’s an easy and organic way to mix it up. It’s the delivery that is awful. Like with Avatar, no one has a problem with a female Avatar and makes sense, just don’t fricking preach to me like this bullshite:

+1 it only made $118 mil, domestically. That boggles my mind. Weapons will pass that total in a week or so.

so your argument in support of Disney is that there arent actually, literally ZERO male heroes in Star Wars now. very well.
