Mason, TX Hunting Lease

I’ve got a lead on a 1200 acre lease just south of Mason on the Llano River. Has anyone hunted in this area and can share what to expect in terms of buck quality? I’ve heard deer numbers are strong, but I’m unsure if the drive from Houston is worth it for the trophy potential. Thinking it'll be worth it simply to have a place to ride around and enjoy the river.

We hunted not far from there. Lots of Typical 120" eights running around, with the occasional 130-150 ten or more point. We killed at 185 one year but it had a hole in the ear..... high fence escapee lol.

You need another to help split cost? I have a supply of feeders and tripods!

Probably not going to have true "trophies" very often but probably a lot of deer.

I don't think that's too far north for Axis. most people hunt that area because of whitetail numbers and the ability to see a lot of Exotics

GreenHead I was invited into this crew, but if there ends up being space, I'll reach out. Where are you located?

West side of Houston, would be a little of a haul for me but for the right setup wouldn't be too bad. Closer than MS.

He's there! He just ain't been spotted yet. That area is where the Brady Buck came from!
Spend the money, ya only live once. Well, wait a minute--did all the deer get warshed away when the creek got up?

While in Mason, be sure to go to the "old yeller" memorial.
We had a lease about 50 miles south for 5-6 years. There is deer to be shot. A lot depends on high fences, water and the hunt objectives of the club. Wild turkeys can be a big plus to a club.

Hunted Eldorado area for years and plan on going back.
As far as a true fair chase hunt, those turkeys can change a man. LOL
Meat hunting, of course deer. Hunting for challenge and reward, turkeys.

I hope it’s better than Junction area lease I have for bucks. I’ve been on my lease out there since April 2024 and it’s awesome but the whitetail hunting blows. I think it may have not been managed very well but the bucks are just overall smaller than South Texas. We are are on the North Lano with about 1.5 miles of river.
I have seen the following critters and tons of them:
Axis
Aoudad
Sitka
2 Fallow Doe
Pigs
Turkey
1 black buck doe
1 wild arse goat that runs with the Aoudad
Don’t think I’ve seen a whitetail over 120 inches yet.

These were the best deer off the place last year but that doesn’t mean you won’t have something completely different.

I’m starting to have some of the nicer bucks show at my place in South Texas and it’s just completely different. I actually see way more deer at my place in South Texas vs my lease. I’ve probably got 14 bucks better than anything on my lease and have 10 or 11 10’s I passed last year and a couple really nice 8’s. Ranch in South Texas is 540 acres and lease is 900 acres. I’ve got 5 total hunters on my lease and it’s just my brother and I at my ranch and we don’t kill much.

My cousin has a place at Fredonia. A lot of deer. No real monsters. A lot of hogs and rattlesnakes, too.

I've hunted about an hour south of there in Mountain Home Texas and there's plenty of deer in that area. As far as bucks go you will run across a lot of your main frame 8's that are 120" and the occasional main frame 10 that will push 130". Body sizes are small.

I hunted a buddies lease over there and there were not many deer at all and it was overrun with pigs. It was back behind the Tractor Supply and Women’s prison.
Lots of pecan orchards and wheat fields back there. There were many hunts I’d only see a few deer but got skunked a lot. I did see two of the best deer out there and they were probably pushing 130. They had a ton of white brush but that particular property was not good for deer.
Lot of good deer were killed all around them though.

You will experience ground shrinkage if you've never had it before. One of my favorite areas to hunt b/c of the amount of deer and wildlife. They will literally come running to feeders. I have killed what I thought were 130's until you get up to them and they are maybe 115''. Small bodies and something about the landscape will fool you. You will have a blast there though.

Wife bought me a Browning a-bolt in 223, with a big Leopol scope just for hunting turkeys in the 100-200 yard range. Head shots and butt shots only to avoid frickin up the breast.
