Brother in law wants to take us out to ship island on the boat this weekend; weather permitting. I’ve never been. The Google says it’s 11 miles out. Is that far enough to help any vibrio issues?

Are you immunocompromised?

On any given pretty day, there’s at least 100 boats anchored out there, don’t really hear much about any illness. Had my 1.5yr old along with 10 other family members out there all day a few weeks ago, no issues.

It is for sewer/septic risk….but vibrio is also naturally occurring so there’s always some level of risk in warm coastal waters.

Just get there first and anchor upstream from all the scumbags. Let them swim in your piss all day. Solved.

Water will be cleaner/clearer than grand isle that’s for sure. Bring dip nets as the crabs are running strong at the MS islands right now.

The people that I am aware of that got it in BSL all got it from boat launches with stagnant water.

We went offshore Friday and were in the Jourdan River Saturday without issue. There was a thread about it last week that recommended waterproof bandages over any open cuts and then clean with Hibiclens when you get out of the water so that's what we did. I guess people are scared because the sandbar was dead Saturday and the weather was great until the late afternoon storms rolled in.

I was in BSL two weeks ago. Also rode up the Jourdan all the way to the steamer. Idk where the salt water intrusion stops in the Jourdan but I don’t think it goes very far

There were dolphins at the I10 bridge a few weeks ago blowing up bait. It's brackish pretty far north. Some of the guys that hang out with us at the sandbar have caught camp trout/reds off their docks well north of I10 when the conditions are right.

If you are immunocompromised and/or have open wounds you are significantly more susceptible. Anyone can get infected though. I’ve been on the boat with hale and healthy people in their 20s-30s who have contracted it by getting finned by bait or handling fish they catch. I wouldnt worry about contracting it out at ship island so much. You will want to be extremely vigilant at whatever harbor/launch you depart from however.

Spent much of a day wade fishing at Cat Island a couple months back this summer, I survived to tell you all the tale.

Had encounters with trout, dolphins, a small shark, and even a huge manatee. Big time had by all without issue. Maybe pack along some antiseptic spray in event of a wound, but go on and live your life !

Just saw the post on the OT about the guy losing part of his leg. I think at least 95% of the cases you hear about have some sort of immune system compromise. It might be 100%.

As already stated, just be careful with open wounds or if you are immunocompromised (though people don't always know that until it's too late). Was out there on Sunday and water was great on the N side. Fricking hot though.

Keep something like Hibiclens on the boat to rinse any new cuts.
