I have been using a Pioneer receiver for many years and it's been fantastic. HDMI light is flashing and reset procedure works for only a few seconds. I'd rather not burn my house down so let's pick a new one.

Here's what this item does. Its sole purpose is to power the built-in speakers in my house. I connect this item to a speaker switch then from there mostly 4 pairs of speakers. This has run flawlessly for over 6 years.
The wife and I use the Google home app and YouTube music. I have an old Chromecast Audio that we cast to.
So, I guess my choices include a new basic receiver to do the same job, something with Chromecast built in like an Onkyo to eliminate the Chromecast Audio, some sort of multi zone receiver to eliminate the switch and other options some of you know about that I don't. Anyway, suggestions are asked for.

Did you try swapping the HDMI cable? Not sure what your HDMI light flashing actually means.

I've had two houses with built in speakers like you. The speakers you have probably cost $60 per pair in each room (I think I had seven zones in the last one). Just stick a Sonos or a Denon in each room. That's what I ended up doing, and was much happier with the sound, and how I could control them directly from Sonos or Pandora without having to switch to a different app to choose which zones were active with which input, etc.

Nothing has ever been plugged in to the HDMI.

I don't think this would work. I just spent a lot of money on the 2 pairs of outdoor speakers and new volume controls for those 4 plus the 2 pairs in the kitchen. When we use these, we are generally moving from kitchen to patio, so we want all 4 pairs playing the same source.

I know what you're saying, but the volume controllers, speakers, etc. were overpriced when they were installed.

I group all my Denon speakers in one group and blast the same tunes everywhere in the house, all the time. I tried the receiver route with built in speakers for a few years, but nobody could actually play music besides me. The sunk cost fallacy kept me on built in speakers for too many years.

Can your wife play music without you? If not, reconsider. The WAF (wife acceptance factor) has value. I understand where you're coming from, but sometimes cutting bait is the easiest path. I get that your math is $1000 for new speakers for four rooms, vs a $650 receiver (cheapest on the Onkyo homepage), but the ease of use, again has value.

I mentioned that. She uses YouTube music and has been trained to cast to kitchen speaker, den speaker etc.

I do not need speakers.

You need to check out Juke Audio. Their device powers speakers in various rooms. You can create speaker groups or connect to one set. The best part is that it is super simple to use.

You could ditch the chromecast and switch with this Sony STR-AN1000

OK, this is interesting. Will research this soon. Thanks

Edit, looks like I would still need the switch.

Why not buy a new amp, an cheap Echo device and then you can control the sound with Alexa.

I use a google device that I assume is like Alexa.

Thread can die, I just bought an Onkyo with Chromecast built in. If that feature sucks, I still have my functional CC Audio.

Have you looked at Denon Heos? Mine has been fantastic. Can connect to it from WiFi and stream from anywhere in the house.

Onkyo came in today. Somewhat stressful setting up and had to deal with errors during updating. Finally got it set up which included a new app to make Chromecast built in work. Well, the built-in is slooooooow. I went ahead and hooked up the Chromecast Audio since that's what the non-tech wife uses and the fact that it's almost instant. Good news is, we both agree the music quality is better than the old Pioneer. May be in our heads, but happy over all. Will need to see what this unit's stand by is. I hope I don't have to power up every day.
