As part of a retrospective of NFL players who played in 1988 (and would they do it again?), this video happened.
SIAP but I just heard about it today

Maybe its a good thing as a CB but I don't ever remember Van Jakes.
I really can't get past 7 minutes of it. It was an awesome team and all they are talking about is chronic pain from playing football. Had to keep checking who made the video. Really crappy production to have ESPN name on it.

Herm Edwards never joined any of those suits against the NFL. He said "I knew what I signed up for".

What I remember most about those Mora teams were playing the 49ers so close, and then losing. For most of them Montana had the ball last, and then once or twice we did. Seems like the score was always 23-21.

They played the Niners as well as anyone, and better than most.

Definitely not a fun watch especially Korte.

I really enjoyed that clip. A lot of insights like the pressure to play hurt and lingering cognitive and physical issues.
I did feel bad for Korte and Jakes and their ongoing struggles.

Steve Korte was a solid lineman. Strong as an ox. Very dependable.
Van Jakes was a good corner. He came over with Hebert, Mills, V. Johnson and a few others when the USFL folded shop. If memory serves, he started some games at CB, but sometimes was the nickel.
The rules and equipment they played with back in their playing days were not to their advantage, but the thing that destroyed their bodies and aged them prematurely was the astroturf fields they played on. It was like playing on painted concrete and at the time, most teams had turf.
Its a shame to see those guys all busted up and broken.

Van Jakes was good player, can't remember the circumstances of him leaving the Saints, but he definitely was a good player.

The thing they will probably never be able to know for sure. Is how much of the issues players have at older age is from the game from head impacts and how much is just getting older and family genetics and things like that.

I haven't seen this topic ever talked about at least comments from players. I would imagine that era of 49ers probably had the same level of respect for them Saints teams as the late 70's Steelers had for Bum's Oilers. I have seen a few videos where them Steelers would talk about how respect they had for the Oilers.

This is absolutely true. If you recall the Top 10 Linebacking Corps show, Randy Cross thought the world of the Saints defense. He singled out Vaughn Johnson as an outstanding player. Roger Craig said they were the hardest hitting and best defense in football.

Ronnie Lott said with any kind of decent offense, the Saints could have won a Super Bowl or two.
