I have a six-year-old son who likes Golf, we have a putting green in our yard he putts on, he likes to hit plastic balls in the backyard. We go and play this 9 hole pitch and putt and he does pretty well, drives it ~80-100yds and can hit an iron in the air at least, on a 100yd hole a 5 is a good score for him and he probably average 6 1/2.

Anyway, he wants to take Lessons and he loves topgolf. We go there a lot. I know Topgolf isn’t the best instruction in the world, but as a place to just teach a six-year-old the basics of the swing is it beneficial? I can also get him in with an actual coach that I got contact info from but that guy is way more serious and I’m worried he’s just gonna be bored.

My thought is to let him do a handful of topgolf lessons to learn the very basic basics, then if he’s enjoying those look at moving him to this more serious guy if he wants. I’m not trying to get my kid on the PGA. I just want him to learn fundamentals so he can enjoy golf for life and maybe play some junior golf.

Does anyone have experience with Topgolf Lessons? I just wanna make sure they’re not a complete waste of time and money.

Are you in BR? If so there’s some good, affordable guys around for juniors.
If Danny Simoneaux is still at TopGolf in BR he would be a good option.

I’m not in BR. I appreciate the rec but I’m really just trying to figure out if Top Golf lessons are worth it for kids. I know he will have more fun at top golf then just some range

I made sure my son knew the basics (I can teach the very very basics) and am just letting him hit tons of balls and play the US kids tournaments

When he turns 10 I’m going to get him real lessons (he is currently 9)

I talked to multiple college guys at my club and they all said this is how they would do it. Let him just get a ton of swings and have his swing and have fun before starting lessons. Lessons are kinda a way a young kid could get burned out. You barely hit any balls

It depends on where you go. I have a buddy who is scratch, and he goes to the guy at the local top golf for lessons.

Yeh I was on your boat. Took him to a lesson at 7. He hated it

Was just too hard on him the amount of standing and listening you do in a lesson vs actually hitting

But to answer your question I would think top golf would be plenty fine for him at 6

This is exactly why I’m looking at top golf

In my opinion, 6 is a little young for lessons. Buy him a kids usa club with a grip trainer on it and let him swing away. It will force him to put his hands in the right place. At that age, that's about all the training he needs. If he loves Top Golf, keep going and just let him hit all the balls he wants. Once he gets to around 8 or 9 and he still loves it, then maybe see about getting him a lesson or so. As far as being a waste of time, if they have a PGA Professional and he is licensed, I guess they should be ok but there is probably a reason the Pro is there and not at a golf club somewhere.

I would say 6 is pretty young for true lessons maybe just basic grip and setup stuff but thats it

Make some like games chipping into a hula hoop for points, or chipping and putting to targets not just the hole, let him hit his driver as far as he can, play other sports that involve hitting and throwing, get him swinging and moving athletically first and foremost.

Just get him a white belt.

What you are doing now sounds fun.

I agree but once again, he specifically asked me to take a golf lesson. So basically can top golf give him that?

Try it. I have a 8 year old. He loves golf and we hit on the simulator most days. I tried teaching him but he got burnt out. So I started him on operation 36. So every hole is 25 yards for 9 holes. Once he shoots 36 or better he moves to 50 yards… he’s obsessed with trying to get to level 2. All I do is work on his grip and get him feeling like he’s shifting his weight forward. At that age find something they enjoy and roll with it. If he likes top golf do that. Don’t put him in front of someone that’s too technical.

Any teacher should be able to give him that because all he needs is the basics. I would run if they start getting too technical or advanced
