Over $221,000 is going towards new resources like vape detectors and telehealth therapy to improve the safety and well-being of middle and high schoolers. As vapes started getting more popular among teens, Superintendent Jody Purvis started seeing more of them on his campuses. “Every day it was going on, so it was a problem,” said Purvis. “Our expulsion rate was high from vapes.”
That’s when he realized something needed to change. “Because of the number of students that we saw with that, we knew there was something we needed to do, and this was the step in the direction to help intervene there,” explained Purvis. He’s talking about installing vape detectors in bathrooms and locker rooms. They detect any smoke or vapor and alert administrators. A nearby camera will also turn on to catch who’s coming and going when the detectors go off. Purvis said these devices do more than just detect vapes, though. “It monitors air quality, they also monitor sound, so for example if someone is in there in distress and they’re hollering for help, it will send an alert to the administration or if there’s a fight in there,” said Purvis.
Now, with the help of new money from the Parish’s Opioid Abatement fund, these devices will be installed in all their middle and high schools. Purvis said the $221,000 will also cover drug testing for alternative program students, a new administrative assistant at the Livingston Alternative Program to help coordinate resources and recovery support, and telehealth therapy for middle and high school students.

Young Legend would have asked a stupid question......"Do those things detect joints?"

I thought they already had them. I know a kid at an LP high school who was caught with a vape, supposedly from a vape detector. And they didn’t just call the kid’s parents. They called the cops and filed charges.

Cops involved seems extreme. Was it a thc vape?

They are trying to solve a problem as old as time (smoking in the boys room). Good luck.

I bought my kids vapes just so we can get in on the future lawsuits.

Expulsion for vaping/smoking. Half my senior class would have been gone before graduation.

Seems like a spectacular waste of everyone’s time and money

When I was in school, smoking a good old fashion joint was the preferred drug of choice for high schoolers. Especially on the last day of school. But of course this was in the late 70s so drug use beyond alcohol and marijuana was very rare
Nothing will ever beat the good ole days of driving around in my 72’ Impala on the last day of senior year, blasting “Slow Ride” with a group of high school buddies and passing a joint around while we all talked about how much we hated our class

Will it detect when a tranny uses the wrong bathroom? Of course it won't! How foolish of me to ask such a homophobic question!

I’ve told my kids that on several occasions my coaches bummed dips off of me on bus rides and team meetings. They can’t even fathom it.
