ETA: no issue with male cheerleaders that tumble and toss the girls around and are actual athletes.

Originally all football cheerleaders were male. They didn't jump around. They pointed to sections of the fans to direct cheers like an orchestra conductor.

College has had male cheerleaders for many years and most are most certainly men that appear very masculine. I believe most are or have been male gymnasts.
