We'll call it Buy, Rent, Throw Away.

The three moves are:

Heat
The Departed
L.A. Confidential

Using these three movies solely because I'm on a little crime/gangster movie kick and these are the last three movies I've watched.

So which movie would you buy so you could have it forever, which one are you renting for a one time watch, and which one are you throwing away never to been watched again?

Buy: The Departed.
Rent: L.A. Confidential
Throw away: Heat

Tough choice but Heat has a few too many ridiculous scenes where guys walk away from it without being caught that makes it unbelievable, so unfortunately it's getting thrown in the trash.

Buy: Heat - Easy pick. One of my favorite movies of all time. Masterpiece
Rent: The Departed
Throw Away: L.A. Confidential

The rent/throw away choice was tough. What tipped it for me is I remember exactly how exhilarating it felt when I first saw The Departed in theaters as a new movie. L.A. Confidential is great but I saw it over a decade after it came out on a random evening at home.

Nice spin off.

Marry:Vera Farmiga (The Departed)
F*ck: Kim Basinger (LA Confidential)
Kill: Diane Venora (Heat)

All the women in Heat were awful. I get it, their husbands weren't exactly good guys, but slept around like it wasn't no big deal.

I really enjoyed Heat but Pacino's typical hammish overacting puts it in the round file.

For me, all three movies would be a buy. So, I get how they could be so close, but then you say:

All three movies have ridiculous, Hollywood plots. All three are extraordinarily well-written, acted and directed. If one of them is even remotely grounded in reality, it is Heat (and I'm not even saying that it is a realistic film.)

Particularly the firearms handling. They use this film to TEACH certain tactical movements, combat reloading, etc.

Probably why The Departed was a semi easy top choice for me. It was the only one I saw in theatres of the three and I was blown away. Stuck with me for a few days after.

This past week was actually my first time watching Heat. It was always near the top of my "great movies that you've never seen for some reason" list. It fit in with the kick I'm on right now so finally watched it. So seeing it so long after it came out might have reduced it a bit for me.

It was a toss up between it and LA Confidential. What was the tie breaker was Vincent and Chris walking away from the massive bank robbery shootout scene. Freaking awesome scene, loved it, and I get that two of the crew members died, but nobody is just walking away from that scene. So the getaway was a little unrealistic. As well as the case out when Chris is coming back to see his wife and she's on the balcony and gives him the signal it's a trap. They just pull him over and the guys check his I.D. and like yep, you're good to go.

Those are very minor complaints and it's splitting hairs fwiw.

Of course they all are buys. You realize the point of the game is it's supposed to be a difficult decision right?

The choices aren't The Departed, Hard Kill and Police Academy 4 for a reason.

The firearms handling was not the reason I had it as the throw away.

Fair enough.

Buy: Heat
Rent: The Departed
Throw away: L.A. Confidential*

(*Realistically, The Departed and L.A. Confidential are essentially 2a and 2b)

I will watch Heat at least another 6 to 8 times, while The Departed and L.A. Confidential might get 1 or 2 more.

(ETA: In fact, I just remembered, I actually own Heat on DVD or Blu Ray... )

Same for me with LA and Heat. Love me some film noir so bonus points to LA Confidential there. The Departed's final 30 minutes were just jaw dropping for me though, so it was a fairly easy top choice. Also love me some Scorsese.

I think an even tougher choice would be to rank the main characters of the three movies.

I don't think really any answer could be controversial since they are all very solid. I think think throwing away The Departed might be the hottest take you could have though.

Though I can see the argument that because The Departed is relying semi heavily on shock value, the re-watchability isn't quite there as much as the other two. .

I just think LA Confidential has become underrated. It's the best total movie of the 3 to me. It has no real flaws in story, acting, directing/cinematography, etc.

Heat is great, but it suffers a bit to me with some of the random wackiness from Pacino. I also grew up watching a lot of HK action movies and watched them before Heat, and because of that Heat was not novel to me like it seems to be for most people. My favorite movie for a LONG portion of my life was the Killer and that predated Heat by like 6 years.

I like the Departed but I've always felt it was overrated. I recently watched Internal Affairs and I like a lot of what the original did differently. I always wished both had more detective work from the Leo character sniffing out the Damon character, because that was the best conflict to me. The ending was a mess and the Leo romance wasn't necessary (and added ro the hammy ending, to me).
