Played there this weekend; not in good shape. Greens have some large barren areas, and are playing extremely slow otherwise. Fairways are dusty; need water.

I had played there a few months ago, when it was in pretty good shape.

Just an FYI. I know it’s a pretty good drive for most people to get there.

I don’t think they’ve watered the fairways or raked the bunkers in years.

They do, occasionally, mow.

Black Bear is in Warden. FYI It is the community north of Delhi.

That’s like a suburb of Delhi lol.

I played there about a month ago on my way back to Monroe from Greenville, MS. I rewarded myself for making it out alive from there with a round of golf. I thought it was actually in pretty decent shape considering they probably spend next to nothing on watering and maintenance.

Yea, it's a shame. It's a great track when maintained. It was rated Golfweeks best public course in La throughout the 2010's and one of the best in the country. Now it's quickly approaching goat ranch status. Louisiana should do better...

The problem is it’s location. It’s not convenient to anything.

Seeings how it's 15 minutes from my house I would disagree

It's definitely in a rural area. But It's 30-40 minutes from Monroe and Vicksburg and the only public course in that part of the world. That's not that far of a drive to play golf. I don't think it's location near as much as broke arse Louisiana isn't maintaining it. It will be interesting to see if they pump some money into it with all the Meta shite going on around here...

You think Monroe and Vburg have a ton of golfers looking to drive 45 minutes away to play golf?

Yes. And they drove to Black Bear and played for several years before it went downhill.

I would go play Morehouse CC in bastrop if I had to play public golf in Monroe at the moment.

Unfortunately our LT Governor is busy filling his pockets with oystermen and pogey boat money to worry about dumping money into and promoting a public golf course in BFE near some Indian mounds and a once decent fishing lake.

Maybe so. Although for some reason they did just pour a bunch of money into a new "event center" out there and re-did the stay/play hotel thing. Maybe one day they'll ungarhole the course. If so they better hurry up...

Black Bear isn’t that bad. Goat ranch bad is Muny on Forsythe and maybe a slight upgrade from Muny is Chennault, even though I honestly enjoy playing it when I come home. Black Bear doesn’t have a boring layout and even though the course might not be super maintained, the pro shop is generally kept up and that goes a long way. I have a feeling that Meta money could definitely help bring that course back to being a go to place because the foundation is in place. And 45 minutes to play golf is nothing.

Black Bear in Delhi has so much potential with META getting started. The state had best invest some funds into the course and save it from the late summer heat.

It was a treat when I got to play Black Bear for the first few years after opening…it was well maintained and cared for. Nowadays, it is three steps above goat ranch.

It is better than Frenchman’s, Chenault, Muny….i would think that Mystic Creek took away many of the golfers that would drive in from Monroe.

Vicksburg would send gamblers over to black bear to golf - that dried up many years ago and had to hurt the bottom line.

If they could somehow get Black Bear to its former glory, the timing may be perfect with META.

I played there back in July and honestly was pleasantly surprised on the conditions. I was expecting dry fairways and parched greens but I guess NE LA has been getting decent rain because everything looked good and on top of that mowed. This was on a Saturday afternoon and there was decent activity given it was about 350 in the shade. I figured it was an even split between probably between the Meta hands and the pipeliners working on that spread up the road. They didn’t look like the typical dudes that would drive over from Monroe. There was quite a few trucks with some company logos on them.

Yea it's been a pretty wet summer until recently. It's helped the course for sure. The irrigation system needs an overhaul.

Black Bear had a big supporter with a lot of money in its early years. His money ran low and then he died. That may be why it isn’t in the best of shape even though it is still a pretty good course.

Who, Dawson? He supported a lot of stuff around Delhi but not sure how he was propping up Black Bear, which is state owned?

Yes Dawson. I'm not sure IV he was giving them money but he had the stroke to work with Francis to get them money.
