Bomb dropped on Nagasaki. On 8/15 Japan surrendered.
The father of one of my high school friends was part of the ground crew that got Bocks Car ready for the mission.

Those bombs saved millions altogether on both sides.

They did. Truman had no other choice.
Just can't fathom the logic that people try to use to say we shouldn't have used the nukes.

Not to mention those in places like Java, Borneo, Thailand, Indochina, Korea, Formosa, and China. Japan still occupied huge portions of SE Asia in August of 1945. And in those areas starvation and disease was running rampant. Tens of thousands of civilians in these areas were dying daily. Had we not ended the war when we did, the death toll across SE Asia would have been catastrophic by the time we either invaded Japan or starved them out via blockade.

The acts of dropping atomic bombs on Japan are responsible for the longest enduring relative peace among world powers in history.

It demonstrated the true futility of war by expediting damage to civilians that would have been done anyway, had they not been dropped.

The Emperor and roughly half the cabinet wanted to find a way to end the war in the summer of 1945. But as long as the army was still in the field fighting, surrender was unthinkable to most. One thing the bomb did was give the Emperor and the other “doves” the excuse to agree to surrender then and there. Basically, it was the off-ramp they’d been looking for.

I agree, countless lives were saved by dropping the two bombs. But we intentionally destroyed 200,000 men, women, and children. This was tragic. We did not target soldiers or military installations. We targeted cities. I believe it was immoral, even if we did so to try and end the war.

Yep.

Had we had to invade mainland Japan the casualties would have been in the 100's of thousands on both sides, and that's not counting civilians.

Truman did the right thing.

You just don’t realize how cruel and evil the japs were to anybody before the bombs. It was deserved and if we invaded many more woman and children would have been slaughtered. Think about it.

My grandfather was set to be part of Operation Downfall. I imagine I would not be posting on Tigerdroppings this lovely August day without the Hiroshima and Nagasaki bombs.

80 years later... Nagasaki looks way better than Detroit/Birmingham/New Orleans/Oakland

The first bomb showed Japan we had built an atomic bomb. The second showed them we didn’t just have an atomic bomb, we had atomic bombs. At that point they’re left to wonder how many more we had.

And considering the incredible industrial capacity we had already demonstrated (see the US Navy and Army Air Force) I’d imagine they were worried we could drop a nuke on their head every few days until nothing was left of the Home Islands except radioactive cinders.
