Fun Fact: Bob Gibson came within 4 outs of an unprecedented "complete season" in 1968.

He started 34 games that year and pitched a combined 304.2 innings. There are 306 total innings in 34 games. Because be pitched 9+ innings in several outings, it made up for the innings that he didn't pitch a full 9 innings

. Keep in mind there were several games that he "only" pitched 8 innings because the Cardinals lost and he didn't take the field in the 9th.

If he recorded 4 more outs that season, he would've pitched a "complete season" worth of 9-inning games, a truly mind numbing accomplishment. We'll never see any pitcher come remotely close to this.

Guy was crazy good, and people forget, he led Creighton basketball, in scoring, and was a globe trotter.

My old man was a bit of a baseball aficionado, and always said Bob Gibson hated every single hitter he ever faced. Pitched angry his entire career

If you tried to pull him in the 5th or 6th like they do today he’d tell the manager to get the frick back in the dugout.

Guys should do that now if they’re dealing… the baseball and basketball nerds have gotten too powerful and it’s affected the product

Tim McCarver (catcher) said he went out to talk to Gibson one time. Gibson said “what are you doing here? The only thing you know about pitching is you can’t hit it.”

I'd pay to see Bonds lean over the plate against Gibson.

Golden Gloves boxer as well. He isn’t brought up enough in GOAT athlete discussion.

Raised mound helped but he would have had a legendary season anyways. Wasn't his ERA in the high 1's that year?

Also read he used to hate the all star game because he didn’t want to be friendly with guys he had to face.

My dad said this also. He said he'd loved to have seen a batter bat flip against Gibson or Drysdale. Said it would've only happened once.

I think he went a whole season without getting taken out from the mound, only removed for pinch hitters.

Back when pitchers owned the plate and controlled the pace of the game. Sadly he didn’t get run support.

Don’t stare at him, don’t smile at him, don’t talk to him. He doesn’t like it. If you happen to hit a home run, don’t run too slow, don’t run too fast. If you happen to want to celebrate, get in the tunnel first. And if he hits you, don’t charge the mound, because he’s a Gold Glove boxer.’ I’m like, ‘Damn, what about my 17-game hitting streak?’ That was the night it ended.” —Dusty Baker

Gibson told Sandy Koufax, one of the nicest guys in the league, that he hated him once. Sandy asked why, and Gibson said "Every time we meet, it's always 1-0, or 2-1. Usually, when it's 1-0, 2-1, I win the game".
