For sale: a decommissioned military nuclear bunker - SWI ...
Switzerland maintains a vast bunker system, capable of sheltering more than its entire population, a legacy of the Cold War designed to ensure civil protection during times of conflict. This system includes over 360,000 bunkers, many of which are hidden beneath schools, hospitals, and even mountains. While some have been decommissioned or repurposed, the system reflects Switzerland's commitment to preparedness and national security.
Here's a more detailed look:
Historical Context:
The Swiss bunker system was primarily built during the Cold War, prompted by the threat of nuclear attack and invasion.
Legal Framework:
Swiss law mandates that new residential buildings include a shelter or contribute to a public one. Public buildings like schools and hospitals also have designated shelters.
Capacity:
The system can theoretically house over 100% of Switzerland's population, ensuring that everyone has a place of refuge.
Features:
Bunkers are designed with reinforced walls, airtight doors, and ventilation systems to protect against radiation, chemical attacks, and biological threats.
Current Status:
While some bunkers are still maintained for their original purpose, many have been repurposed for other uses like storage, wine cellars, or even tourist attractions.
National Redoubt:
The bunker system is also a key part of the Swiss National Redoubt, a broader network of fortifications and defensive plans developed to protect the country from invasion.
Civil Protection:
The bunkers are a testament to Switzerland's emphasis on civil protection, demonstrating a commitment to ensuring the safety of its citizens in times of crisis.

Switzerland hasn't been attacked in nearly 1000 years
Posted on 8/6/25 at 4:17 pm to TutHillTiger
I can't image what they could have possibly seen in Europe over the past 500 years that would lead them to take such drastic precautions.
Don't they know about cafe culture and diversity being our strength?

So they can hide, but fighting back isn't going to do much.

Currently the Swiss air force has a peacetime strength of 1,600 career military and about 20,000 reservists on call. Its air defence consists of 30 McDonnell Douglas F/A-18 Hornets and 53 Northrop F-5 Tiger IIs (110 purchased in 1978–85)
Not even half the size of the tiny French Air Force

The number of aircraft in service with the French Air and Space Force varies depending on the source; the Ministry of Armed Forces gives a figure of 658 aircraft in 2014. According to 2025 data, this figure includes 207 combat aircraft: 99 Dassault Mirage 2000 and 108 Dassault Rafale. As of 2021, the French Air and Space Force employs a total of 40,500 regular personnel, with a reserve element of 5,187 in 2014

Yeah the Fins are like that too. Just ask the Russians about their disastrous winter war. No many complete battalions were lost they claimed they were attacked my monsters and werewolves etc. The woods or land attacked and killed the Russians per their soldiers

Switzerland would have been a tough nut to crack, but the Germans could have if necessary. It served their purpose to have a conduit to the western financial system. It's also arguable that Germany wouldn't have had to invade, they could have fomented a coup. There was a lot of Nazi sympathy in Switzerland. Allied airmen who found themselves in "neutral" Swiss custody didn't have an easy time in Swiss internment camps.
Sweden was much more neutral than Switzerland.
