Was thinking of taking some time by the beach next year and renting out a house out there. Is it cool? I've heard it's pretty. Better places in Florida?

It's slightly less populated compared to Ft. Lauderdale Beach with less of the restaurants. Still has the views.

I like just south of there in Sunny Isles or Bal Harbour, but it's all condos.

Cool, cool, we are bringing the doggo so being close enough to walking to the beach is kind of our goal. Plus, the casino nearby and the music venue. Also being far enough away from Miami lol

I live most of the year in South Florida. I avoid that area as much as possible.

On the East coast, Boca Raton is the place to go. Clean, upscale, nice bike trail great dining scene.

Meh. Boca everything there. Boca Grove, Boca Cove, Boca Pointe, Boca Boca Boca…it’s kind of annoying.
Go to Deerfield Beach, DBI is a different flow than areas north or south of it. Kind of cliquey, but a good area. All of about 5 minutes from Boca as well.

The immediate beach area there is probably the last vestige of an Old Florida sort of beach feel you will find in S. Florida.
I found it sort of cool in that regard, but admittedly know nothing about what it would be like to live there.

My wife is from south Florida, and Hollywood Beach is my favorite spot down there. We always gravitate toward renting an air bnb near the Hollywood Boardwalk and/or the historic downtown.
As someone else said, it's more old school. North and south of Hollywood (Ft. Lauderdale to the north, Miami to the south) is built up with high rises, a lot of night clubs, more traffic, more people, etc., and I love that stuff, and it's only a 20-ish minute drive away.
But I also like the more relaxing, laid-back vibe that you'll find in the town and on the beach in Hollywood. The free live music at the Hollywood beach boardwalk in the evenings, the taco food trucks during the day, etc.

Summer is offseason down here.
I live in Vero Beach. Vero is a laid back town (compared to everything further south), with no high rise condos, a good art and music scene, and lots of good restaurants. It's very walkable and golf cart accessible with no busy roads around. Ocean Drive in Vero Beach almost has a Cape Cod vibe with a lot of old buildings, shops, and restaurants. Definitely not the touristy new Florida look.
It is also an hour south of Cape Canaveral, 90 minutes from Orlando, and 2 hours drive from Miami.
Another laid back place to consider is Hutchinson Island - they have a fantastic off-leash dog park called Walton Rocks. Just a regular beach, but you can let your dog run free - just clean up their mess.
Hutchinson Island is quiet with only a few restaurant options (but they are good), but if you're looking for relaxing, it has that. For more restaurants, you can cross the bridge on the south end of the island to Stewart, or the north end for Fort Pierce.
Both of these choices are definitely more rural and much quieter than the greater Miami Metro area, but the beaches are beautiful and very accessible. You can park your car in the parking lot right by the beach entrance and walk on with no problem.
