22LR Precision Shooting Thread
Posted on 8/3/25 at 8:02 am
Posted on 8/3/25 at 8:02 am
I'm just starting to look into shooting 22lr rifles for the best groups at various yardages
I shot my Ruger 10/22 LVT yesterday at 25 yards with Aguila Super Extra with a few 5 shot groups coming in around 3/8" with a Vortex Crossfire II on it. I don't think that's very good but I'm completely green to this.
With the very limited "research" I've done in precision rimfire shooting, it seems like this is a rabbit hole worth considering for another hobby and can be (like everything) expensive if you dive just somewhat into.
Just interested in seeing what everyone's set up with rifle, scope, ammo and experiences with different things are. Tips, fun things to try, ect would be appreciated. I'm not going to strap myself with a budget because I'm just trying to gain knowledge about it. Ideally, I'd like to have whatever is considered "decent" groups at 50 to 100 yard distances with another rifle of course
ETA: and pics are always welcome

I only wish my old Winchester 290 shot that good, lol. Try a box of Eley semi auto precision bench rest ammo. It’ll tighten up your groups, at least it did in my rifle.

I have a CZ 457 in a Manners stock with a Vortex PST 5-25 scope and other goodies from Area 419. My ammo preference is Lapua Center-X. It shoots tiny groups out to 100 yards. I competed in NRL-22 matches and have hit 2 MOA targets out to 300 yards. There are guys really into this who are running $4,000 rifles and crazy set ups with barrel tuners.
Try different ammo to see what your rifle likes best.

I shoot rimfire PRS with a CZ 457 with a L3i barrel, and Vortex Strike Eagle. Currently I’m shooting Eley Match in that rifle. I also have a CZ 457 MTR with a Arken EP-5 that i shoot Lapua center-X out of.
Eley, Lapua, and RWS are the three match brands of ammo you will see at matches.
Vortex strike Eagles are probably the most popular scope for new shooters and you will see ZCO’s and Kahles scopes as well.
Vudoo and Rim-X dominate the top shooters there are some Bergaras, but CZ is capable of competing with those custom rifles.
The rifles used at PRS matches will regularly shoot 1/4” or smaller groups at 50 yds and around 1/2” at 100yds.
With good wind conditions shooting 0.1” groups at 50 is a goal to shoot for from a bench.

Thank you for all the info pics.
Is this competition winning groups or is this something I could obtain with say a 457 Varmint, the MTR or even a Ruger Precision Rimfire?

Isn't that what TigerOnTheHill uses to smoke all the prairie dogs? I think his are technically pistols though.

Disclaimer: I've never shot a 22LR in a competition.
I've got a number of 22LR's. I shot them a fair amount during Covid when I struggled finding hand loading components for my centerfire guns. I've done reviews for some of them on this board. I've been meaning to do a shoot out w/ my 22's to see how accurate they are (or aren't). Your 10/22 looks to have some promise. My guns normally shoot really well at 25 yds, but open up considerably at 50 yards. Consequently, I don't compare loads at 25 yards. Instead I shoot at 50 and 100 yards. Here's my thoughts on the accuracy of my 22's, listed from most accurate (top) to least accurate (bottom). All have factory barrels, except for the 10/22. The 10/22 has had a trigger job. I changed the trigger springs on the 77/22.
Tikka T1x. Small gap separating the next 2 guns.
Savage Mk II~~Ruger 10/22 w/ custom Feddersen barrel
Ruger 77/22
Howa M1100. Big gap between Howa and 77/22. Everyone seems to have problems w/ the Howa factory magazines feeding well.
Ammo: It'll sound weird, but I've never shot "match" ammo in my 22's. When comparing the non-match ammo, CCI "standard velocity" is the most accurate in all. of the guns. As velocity of the round goes up, accuracy goes down. In my guns, some of the "high velocity" rounds (muzzle velocity ~1250 fps) are pretty accurate. For me, CCI "Small Game Bullet" is the most accurate hunting round, but it's nearly impossible to find. Aguila is surprisingly accurate in most of my guns. Aguila and CCI subsonic HP are both really accurate loads for me.
When I bought the Tikka, I really wanted a CZ. CZ had just announced the new, "Americanized" model, but the model I wanted didn't make it to the shelves until a few years later. I've come close to buying the Begara a couple times.
Scopes: I've got a number of scopes, all of which please me. I like the Burris Timberline 4.5-14X, but it's been discontinued. I've got two illuminated reticle scopes for night shooting, Athlon 6-18X and Hawke 4-12X. I exclusively use oe piece Weave rail and Burris Signature Z-rings (the ones w/ the plastic inserts) to mount all my scopes. Adjustable parallax is nice, but I don't like it on a scope for night shooting.
Tikka T1x on a prairie dog hunt
Savage on its first night coon hunt.
ETA: If I do my part, using its favorite ammo, the Tikka will shoot 5 shot groups of 1" at 100 yds about 40-50% of the time. At 50 yds, I expect 5 shot groups of about 1/2" at 50 yds w/ all my 22's, except for the Howa.

The Ruger precision is a no. If you really want to get a rifle to shoot groups or PRS type shooting don’t get a Ruger Precision rimfire.
The 457 varmint is a lot better than the Ruger and you can upgrade the 457 to whatever point you want. The 457 MTR will shoot better than the 457 varmint. The MTR also comes with a stock that is more comfortable for shooting groups.
As far as shooting groups in the 0.1”-0.2” range with any of those 3 is maybe possible with the MTR and that would require you finding an amazing ammo lot. The ruger is a no and the varmint is highly unlikely.

TigerOnThe Hill as always, thorough and "real world use" to your 22lr shooting
As you said in another thread, replying to me, you have a 457 but nothing on it is stock but 1 or 2 things as you've upgraded basically everything. Eyes are back on a 457
meltingman and 07, learn me on competitions just for curiosities sake .. How often, how local, cost, # of participants, have you placed?

I run a rimfire PRS match at my local range. We host monthly matches on the forth Sunday of every month. We average 15-20 shooters per match, and the cost is $30 per shooter. You could find a match to shoot every weekend if you do some traveling.
Last months match that we hosted was a PRS regional qualifier. Shooters have to shoot a regional qualifier to get invited to regionals so those matches will get a higher attendance. We had 49 shooters at the qualifier, and the cost was $40, lunch was provided. Attendance included shooters from Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, and Florida.
I have won 2 of the matches at my local range.

I have the Varmint with the Boyds AT-ONE stock. No mods other than a scope and bipod, I was surprised at how good my groups at 100yds are.

I'll stick with my Winchester 67 single shot bolt rifle, circa 1936-37, walnut stocked and factory original.
I love shooting off iron sights and I love that rifle.

The matches I shoot are positional stages that include steel targets. A hit on the target is a hit, doesn't matter if its an edge hit of dead center, they both count as hits. We shoot from different props, such as ladders, cattle gates, the top of posts, or anything else we can dream up.
For an example this is part of the Course of Fire from one of our recent matches.

I run a Vudoo V22 with various Lapua ammo at 200yds. We hold matches every first and third Sunday at my range. We get people from all over. Miss TH and I shoot in the modified division. She is running a CZ 457 pro precision trainer MTR. My grandson shoots stock division running a CZ 457 MTR with Norma TAC22 ammo weighed out to a ten thousands of a gram.
Basically we are shooting long gong. Three plates, 12, 8, 4 inch with ten rounds on each and we have a single shot at a one inch plate for a bonus three points.

Thx for the kind words, B&B. I'll add support for the CZ 457. My cousin has one chambered in 17 HMR. It's full factory w/o any enhancements. Granted, he's an excellent shot, but I've seen him shoot lots of sub 1" groups at 100 yds w/ factory ammo. He took it on a prairie dog hunt w/ me and it was amazing how many shots he made at 200 yds, despite the OK wind. The CZ 457 was the gun I originally wanted when I got the Tikka T1x. At the time, CZ didn't have a model w/ synthetic stock and mod heavy 20" barrel that was threaded. Looks like they do now.
I've not seen much talk here about the Bergara. Does anyone here shoot one?

Interested to hear opinions on the Bergara as well as Christensen Arms 22 riflew

Bergara performance is only limited to how much you are willing to spend. Bergara is producing heavy contour barreled actions that are performing really well.
The Christensen Arms is a no.
