Not sure where everyone else stands on this.

But we either need to do away with the reservations or anyone who lives on the reservation should not be allowed to vote and participate in federal politics.

I don’t get this arrangement that people 5 generations removed from any of these events continues to live both as an American and as an Indian.

It should be one or the other

Peter Santelleo or whatever had a YouTube video about a reservation where all the natives received stupid sums of money.

Today we travel to Cherokee in North Carolina to witness a tribe that’s doing extremely well financially. Kids graduate high school with hundreds of thousands of dollars set aside in an account, higher education and health care are paid for by the tribe, and their land is some of the most beautiful in America. Join me for this eye-opening experience!

Why is that?

You mean you don't understand why treaties have to be honored?

It all used to be their land. I have no issue with them having a little reservation.

Native Americans aren't really high on my list of things that desperately need addressing in this country right now.

Ok if the treaty says that, then we should end the treaty

It’s not a good arrangement and the people living there are multiple generations removed. Who cares? They didn’t suffer any hardships and neither did anyone they have ever known.

Who’s land? Indians were never this unified thing like revisionists always pretend. Just a bunch of random tribes constantly fighting and killing each other for control of different areas.

They never built anything here. And the tribes that were here lost. Get over it, either be an American or not. You don’t get to have it both ways.

And once that story makes international news, why would anyone enter into an agreement with us again?

You’re wrong. Indians operate under treaties with the federal government we meant and those treaties should be honored.

They still aren’t. You have tribes like the Shakopee where everyone is a fricking millionaire then you have God awful places like Pine Ridge and Wind River.

You also have to consider how corrupt those reservations can be. Navajo Nation is the size of West Virginia with assets of over 2 billion, yet the poverty rate in it is 40-50% and has 13 grocery stores total.

It’s their fricking land! Now granted a lot of tribes live in poverty but that’s their choice. You’ve lost your mind if you think kicking this hornets nest is a great idea political or not.

There is only one reservation in Alaska. The rest live in villages, towns and cities.

ANCSA

Basically a payoff to the natives for less pushback on the pipeline, at the time.

So it was OK to run them off their land because they were not advanced? I doubt Jesus would agree.

I love America. I appreciate the struggles of our ancestors. But we shouldn't begrudge anyone who receives a little something. There is no reason Native Americans can't celebrate their heritage while being a US citizen.

That's the Cherokee Nation in Tennessee. Besides hotels and casinos, they own the Bucees in Pigeon Forge.

Drove through there last year. You always hear about the reservations being poor. That was a beautiful place and definitely looked far from poor.

This is one of the shittiest takes I've ever read on here. And that's really saying something.

End the treaty? Sheesh. Sound like a Democrat that wants to end the constitution, or our treaty with the Federal Government.

That's North Carolina. All of the Cherokee originally from East TN (The Overhill Cherokee - The clans from The Tennessee/Western side of the Great Smoky Mountains) are in Oklahoma after the trail of tears. Outside of the few who went into hiding & joined up with what later became the Eastern Band of Cherokee that are located in Cherokee, North Carolina. I grew up ginseng hunting, camping & fishing in the same moutains, creeks & streams they hunted & fished on around Tellico Plains TN in the Southern Cherokee National Forest. A small town in Monroe County where Sequoyah was born. It's never lost on me how large the Cherokee population would be on both sides of the mountains if not for the trail of tears. Most of that land is still untouched like it was hundreds of years ago. It's beautiful country & one of the most scenic areas East of the MS

I agree that reservation is a bad word. Make it Territorial Easment or something.

The rest you spoke is BS.
