NIN takes Josh Freese from FF.

FF get Ilan Rubin from NIN.

quote:

Foo Fighters have brought in Ilan Rubin just months after firing drummer Josh Freese.

Rubin, who has been a touring member of Nine Inch Nails since 2009, will step in for Freese as the band’s drummer. It’s unclear if his role will be permanent or just for touring.

I feel like NIN is definitely coming out on top.

Same. I saw FF twice last summer. I thought Freese was pretty awesome.

Freese is one of the best drummers playing today. He’s just never had one band to call home. The problem with NIN is that they tour so infrequently now that Freese will probably float around while they are on hiatus.

Don’t diss The Vandals like that.

Not only that, but Ilan took over from Josh in Danny Elfman's band when Josh got the FF gig. I was at a few of the rehearsals with Josh before Coachella in 2022. Josh is a great drummer and fricking loud. Nice guy.

Josh, Paz and Dave Navarro should find a lead vocalist (maybe Corey Taylor?) and form a supergroup called, "The Wanderers".

Josh is the better musician, he just doesn't fit FF's.

He definitely fits NIN.

These bands are as insular as NFL coaching searches.

There are a lot of super talented musicians out there. Primus just plucked drummer John Hoffman out of Shreveport and that dude is phenomenal and he was playing in shitty bars 6 months ago.

Perhaps they should expand their horizons a bit instead of just recycling the same guys (very talented guys, of course)

I doubt there's much payoff though if they do that, and much more risk than going with someone who they've already worked with or someone they know.

Freese didn't work out with FF, so that wasn't a fool-proof method either.

Nice. I’ve got good 5-day stretch planned in Atlanta. Coheed & Cambria, Chevelle and NIN.

I think that Freese's style was maybe a little too "studio" for Grohl's liking. Grohl tapped Hawkins because of his loose, punk style, ehich was similar to Grohl's style.
It can make a big difference in live settings especially....

We were lucky enough to go see the Sessanta Tour in Palm Springs in April. Hoffman was so damn groovy and fun to watch, and knowing it was his first full show with Primus sitting up there with Freese made me excited for him.

Totally different sounds and so cool to see the 3 (+Gunnar Olsen) all drumming together in that format. Freese' drum sound has so much snap and attack it's crazy.

LOL

Taylor Hawkins was hired out of Alanis Morissette‘s band. Josh is in The Vandals.

Freese's own words, "Other reasons listed included his "metronome-like precision behind the kit [was] deemed ‘soulless'"...
