I-12 between BR and Hammond is insane. I was driving back from Juban crossing and a truck about 40 yards in front of me flew through the air, did a flip, and landed on its side. We were going the speed limit and i was already pretty far ahead of where it landed by the time i processed it and even if i wanted to, i couldn’t turn around due to the way the median is there. I called 911 to report it and felt guilty for days for not stopping to help. I looked in the news for the next week and didn’t see any reports of an accident with injuries or fatalities.

I know. Dear Facebook. Glad i could get that off my chest.

What does another lane have to do with someone being run off the road?

I-12 between Baton Rouge and Hammond is insane. It's always congested and there's frequently serious accidents despite that section being relatively straight and flat. It's yet another neglected stretch of highway in Louisiana, and its condition has definitely caused fatalities.

It has been in need of a major investment for 20 years, but they stopped widening in Livingston Parish for some reason. Maintenance is very poorly executed, there's always trash and debris along the shoulders and sometimes in the travel lanes. The pavement is already degraded in the 6 lane section, and almost the entire section needs to be re-striped and new reflectors added.

That section needs to be at least 6 lanes with a barrier down the middle to prevent crossover accidents and lighting at every interchange. And I-12/I-55 needs to have a separate lane for on/off ramps if they retain the cloverleaf configuration. So does the I-12/Airline Highway interchange.

Maybe they shouldn't be driving cars with 80,000 pound killing machines out there. Using laws that are a century old.

They seem to hate the taxpayers.

Doesn't matter if it's US190, US61, LA1, LA22, or LA30.....maintenance is atrociously bad. Even things like stripes and reflectors have been worn out and missing for years.

Won't even get into the inability to keep our highway routes functionally relevant with widening projects, alignment improvement, or lighting. They fail miserably at that too.

I'm sure the Nissan played a part in it. They always do. It's probably not even it's third bout of body damage.

I say, we just make all 18 wheelers illegal on the interstates. Hell, just make them illegal all together. I can survive without them. Can YOU?

I just asked my state Senator about this exact topic over the weekend.

First, there's plenty of money to expand I-12. The issue is it can't be allocated in one lump sum. It has to be done in small portions (this explains the odd patchy construction). It was done this way to stop corruption but has been a disaster when it comes to getting infrastructure built.

They are trying to write and pass legislation to correct the issue.

I’ve been driving I-12 from Hammond to BR for 23 years now between school and work. As much as I hate to say it, things seemed much safer when the interstate was constantly being monitored by LEO. Now it’s the fricking Wild West and it will only continue to get worse. The shite that drivers pull at 70 mph, much less 90 mph, is frightening.

They need to ticket the people going 50 mph down the highway as much as those weaving and doing 90.

It is nearly impossible to drive on I-12 and keep a safe distance of the car ahead without having some dipshit try to go around you in the right lane while you are attempting to pass the car going too slow. That is probably the worst stretch of interstate in the state, if not the region.

To have the far left lane merge and not an exit lane on the right to go from 3 to 2 is dangerous and stupid

You would be 100% wrong on that one Phil. 2024 stats say the rig was at-fault in 32% of all crashes. That's less than a third of the time. Guess who gets the blame for the other 2/3's? Might want to redirect that hate.

Agree completely. You assume I mean otherwise?

It's criminal how neglected Louisiana's highways are from a maintenance perspective.

I will say that the section they widened about 10 years ago is a lot better and safer now. That was 2 governors ago. Why did they stop the progress after only a few miles?
