I am looking for recommendations for a male psychologist in the Lafayette and Baton Rouge area. The preference would be that they accept insurance. Any suggestions?

That would be highly subjective based on the issues you're dealing with.

Very fair assessment. The interest is with someone who can deal with existential concerns about mortality due to a cancer diagnosis, and a desire to improve as a husband. Maybe support in processing emotions, addressing existential fears, and enhancing interpersonal skills?

I don't have any knowledge of BR, but I can say I highly recommend therapy. I never thought it's something that would help me, but life events threw me for a complete loop. Therapy hasn't solved my problems, they're still there, but it helps me to cope. There are weeks where that 50 minutes is the only time I get to talk about the things on my mind, because nobody else wants to hear about them. Good luck.

Well said. Or at least someone who wants to hear your thoughts and aren't just waiting until they can speak.

Corey Porche is not a psychologist, but he's a well known professional counselor in the area. My wife (clinical psychologist) recommends him. You're going to have a hard time finding a male clinical psychologist in the Lafayette area unfortunately.

If you're a veteran you can try the VA as well.

Best of luck to you.

Mark D’Aunoy.
Great man. I have no idea about the insurance but he is very wise and listens with intent.

Go to your insurance website and search for providers in network within a specified radius from your home. Could try www.psychologytoday.com as a search engine to find a local provider. Good luck with finding one accepting new patients and your insurance. You will have more luck finding one that charges $120-150 cash per hour. If you are unhappy with healthcare in the US don't vote Republican.

You can also find them on Talkspace. Mine was only $80 an hour, cash payer. Do it via webcam.

My therapist is a 29 year old female (no pics, she's kind of chunky). Needless to say I had misgivings, but she's who was available that was in my network. As it turns out she's pretty empathetic and insightful. Would a 40-60 year old man have a better frame of reference about my experiences? Of course, but she's pretty good.

Look for someone who uses Acceptance and Commitment Therapy as a modality. It works really well with what you mentioned as your presenting issues.

I’ve had all types of therapists and the younger female ones are usually the most empathetic. The older males tend to challenge you and your thoughts, and it can be unsettling when you are in a vulnerable state. Different things work for different people though. I’ve had 3 therapists that I’ve really connected with and about 4 that I didn’t. A good therapist helps a lot, even if it’s just to have someone bounce ideas off and be an unbiased voice.
