The ol' lady and I are nearing 60 and aches and pains are starting. What are your recommendations for a good mattress?

We got purple. And also got their pillows. You need to try out different firm levels. If you’re heavier you probably need a more firm mattress. If you tell these mattress companies you didn’t like their mattress they’ll let you send back with in 60-90 days and get your money back. They’ll also offer you mattress toppers and pillows for free. We tried like 4-5 major mattress companies and purple was the best for us.

We tried 9 over the span of 18 months. Ultimately we learned we need the firmest mattress on the market, which is the plank mattress.

Even after 2 years is just OK. Our next will be a sleep number type bed.

We had a Sleep Number and loved it for a few weeks. The novelty wears off and it really isn't that great. I like my mattress somewhat firm but 'firm' on a Sleep Number is more like 'hard' and it bows it up a bit in the middle. The only setting that didn't kill my back was 35/40 and it reminded me of a waterbed.

Few years ago we ditched the Sleep Number, tried every mattress brand under the sun and settled on a Stearns & Foster lux estate. Love it.

Seniors here.

IMO it is impossible to go to a mattress store and lay on one for 5 minutes and be able to decide on what will be comfortable after 6-7 hours of laying on it.

We had the Sleep Number for a few years and as mentioned, it's has some good features but seems to become sort of uncomfortable after a year or two. Have tried several others that let you return after a trial period if it's not the one you want.

Currently have a Tempur-Pedic that is going on a year old and is still meeting the comfortable sleep needs.

Good luck in your search and don't hesitate to send the mattress back if it's not what you want and you have that option.

It's pretty useless to get mattress recs from people, I've finally figured out. For every person who says a mattress is too firm, the next person complains the mattress is too soft. You get people shitting on the most expensive, luxurious mattresses out there while others champion some of the cheapest bed-in-a-box products. Mattresses are one of the most subjective purchases out there.

We just got a new one a few months ago. Originally had a Tuft & Needle memory foam - surprisingly firm not really anything bad to say about that one, just swapped to a Dream Cloud hybrid which I like better so far.

I’m 68, husband is 74. We’ve had our free floating waterbed since 1982. It’s wonderful, and inexpensive.

Most folks do better with a firm mattress. Spring ones typically last the longest. You know a good mattress for you by how you feel when you come off it in the morning.

If you go to a mattress store with your wife get ready. As soon as she lays on the Sterns and Foster Ultimate Estate with cooling technology and the proprietary memory foam pillow top hand woven from angels hair you’re fricked.
