Chinese Crawfish Tails

Why is it so hard to find the real Louisiana stuff here in Houston. I'm making a gumbo and they only sell the Chinese stuff here in Houston (Well I can't find the Louisiana Stuff.) As painful as it was, I broke down and bought the inferior product since it was my only choice. To make it worse I also bought some crab meat and looking at it originally thought it was wild caught in Louisiana. Looking at it closely, it is from Thailand
Well here is to my Chinese gumbo. Well at least I have some Poche's Andouille sausage.

Just started seeing fresh LA tails in BR (for about $12-$14 a pound), but we usually can find them frozen. Have you tried Tony's Seafood in BR? They might be able to ship it to you.

i'm surprised to hear you have this problem in Houston. i've had this problem for a while but i'm in the midwest. recently, however, Louisiana crashfish tails have appeared in my local grocery store. i was pretty excited about that. the chinese tails have a horrible taste that i just can't get past.

Sucks. They are so cheap, they dominate the U.S. retail market. Watch out for Chinese catfish as well. These sneaky companies will even try to fool you. I once picked upsome catfish (kind of hard to find up North) with an American flag on the packaging and a company name of "American Seafoods." On the bottom of the packaging in small letters was the phrase "fish raised in China."

You can get Louisiana crawfish at Louisiana Foods off of the loop.
If you want crab meat, run down to Kemah to the fish markets.
Or hell, you can catch all of this stuff yourself on the east side of town. I know a couple guys who run crawfish farms over there if you ever need live.

i've become really careful about reading labels because of this; many bags will have US addresses because they are packaged here but you have to look closer to make sure they are actually raised here.

That's the only place I found them too.

A few of them are still closed due to being destroyed by the storm, but some are operating from temporary buildings.

As long as Rose's survives, that's all that matters.

The only one left standing was a yellow two story building. That Pappadeaux's down there was destroyed also.
ETA: Google says Rose's is closed.

shite. That's disappointing. Rose's was the best one down there...they were just getting ready to move into their new building right next to Pappadeaux's.

The road was blocked off, you can't even get close to Pappadeaux's.

I can't find the La. tails in Shreveport-Bossier.

I hate to ask this question, but honestly, what is the honest distinction between Chinese and Louisiana crawfish? I mean a zebra in Africa is the same zebra at the Audubon zoo. I understand the whole "buy local" thing and support it wholeheartedly, but I have never heard a logical or palatable reason to prefer one more than the other.
ETA: I will give anyone $100 if they can accurately taste the difference between the two.
