Contemplating a quick trip to Colorado next week. Wife and I only.....can fly into Colorado Springs or Denver. Just looking for some place to hike a little, shop a little, maybe fish or kayak/raft. Nothing planned but contemplating Vail.

Been to Estes Park, Salida/Buena Vista the last two summers, so i'm leaning away from those places. Only thinking Vail since it would offer nice accommodations and fine dining after the daily activities. Really just looking for a getaway and trying to stay within 2 hours of airports.

Any other places that i should consider within a couple of hours of the airports mentioned? Plan to arrive early on Thursday and flight back early Sunday....so basically Friday and Saturday for activities.

TIA

Manitou Springs just outside of Colorado Springs. Some call it a "Hippie Mayberry"
You could day trip to Canon City/Royal Gorge if you want to do some rafting.

Durango/Silverton/Ouray is my favorite area, but closer to a 5 hour drive from Colorado Springs.

Stay in Boulder and you can day trip to the ski resort areas or go up to Rocky Mountain NP.

Canon city. Raft the roal gorge. Take the royal gorge train. Neat drive out there (assume rental car).
More arid mountain area than North of Denver. Lots to do in the area though.

Breck is nice this time of year . It has everything you want. Book a dinner at Rootstalk and La Francaise Bisro...thank me later.

What about Gunnison and Crested Butte this time of year? How is it in the summer?

Just got back from Vail. Good trip in the summer. Everything you want (hiking, rafting, golf, shopping, eats/drinks) is close by.

vail is very nice but very sterile, ie: no character. However there is good food and drink (and shopping) and some very nice places to stay. We like the manor vail lodge.

However, if there’s a show at the ford amphitheater, then vail is what I would choose. It is the nicest and most beautiful amphitheater I’ve ever been to.

Also be advised (if that’s your thing) there’s no dispensary in vail, so stop on the way in georgetown

Heading to CB now. We came up here last year at the same time and it’s amazing. The nights get chilly, but so much better than the heat. Hiking, fly fishing, there’s tons of stuff to do!

I’ve never visited those spots. We usually spend our time in Summit County with a day trip to Vail on occasion.

decided upon this....leaving next Wednesday.

A little hiking, Garden of the gods, Pikes Peak, rafting Royal Gorge.....quick 3 day trip.

Trying to decide whether the big horn rafting trip (II and III type rapids) or the royal gorge trip (III and IVs) is right for us. I'm fine with the IIIs and IVs but not sure about the wife??

Thanks to all for suggestions

Aspen isn’t exactly all that close to Denver, but we hiked around maroon bells a few summers ago and it was absolute paradise

Also did horseback riding through the mountains among the aspen trees, ate lunch by a trickling stream, it was something right out of a movie

Absolutely no one calls Manitou hippy Mayberry, how do yall come up with this stuff? The homeless drugs addicts in the parks will clear up any misconceptions about this.

It’s a fun place for a day though with a good Mexican spot, Crystal Park Cantina.

It's getting into low water time of year. Do the gorge, but there will likely be a lot of rocks exposed and a very technical run.

I keep going back and forth between the RG and Bighorn. Looked at some videos of the RG and it looks great....but my wife likely wouldn't be a fan of continuously holding on for dear life. Not sure as to the time of the year in the videos, but it looks pretty insane.
