PSA: Gift cards hacked

Be careful where you or your spouse buys gift cards. Wife (no pics) got me one from Publix and it was hacked before we even bought it. Assholes are getting all of the info 1 of 2 ways: scanning it at the store or buying some, take them home, steal the info and repackage and put back on the shelf and when you purchase them, they have the info. Happened to my Father's Day card. The wife is working with Publix to get our money back and she thinks we will but be careful where you buy. If the place selling them doesn't secure them (Publix doesn't), then don't buy or you'll go through what we're going through.

I have both bought and received them that were bought from Kroger. I thought those were pretty damn secure.

Some cashiers at the Hammond Lowe's got busted doing that... last I heard it was like $40k before anyone caught it.

This has been happening for a long time. If I were to give a gift card, I’d check with my bank for a pre-loaded visa gift card. Definitely never a gift card off of the rack. Sorry that happened to you.

Live and learn.....if we send by mail it's a check, in person it's cash.

Never buy a gift card that is just out in the open in a store.
Anyone can get the number off that and they just wait for you or your wife to load it then spend it.
Like at Walmart they have a display with all the gift cards. Never buy those.

Just sucks. To give or receive a gift that’s been hijacked is no doubt uncomfortable for recipient and giver. Around Christmas I was going to give a gift card to a friend. Stumbled into this same issue from said store gift cards reading online so didn’t give it.

How do they know when you activate it, do they just try everyday to see?

Your wife is likely using the money on illicit websites after buying the cards, and then gifting them to you to cover the trail.

People need to stop buying gift cards. Just give them money if you that terrible at getting gifts. A lot of them you got to jump through all kinds of hoops just to use it. I had one that I couldn't get to work and eventually had to use it at amazon to buy an amazon gift card that I could then use, but only at amazon. And many people don't ever use them up completely and that only profits these big business selling them. Cash is king and gift cards are for the poors. So stop giving out gift cards and just give cash.

Gift cards suck. My son went through my wallet the other day and found two and asked if he could have them and I said yes. He called and checked the balance one had $0.18 and the other had just over a dollar. He then threw them away. We just gave the gift card/credit card company more money by not wanting to carry these around any more.
In another instance, my wife got a rebate gift card after buying the dog's meds. It was just over $100 but the gift card didn't work anywhere else but the vet. We looked like hobos having our card declined at multiple places before figuring it out.

No one in the history of ever has complained about getting cash instead of a gift card

That's my guess and it makes the most sense

The issue I've seen is when you get online to activate the card, there's tons of fake websites that are a letter or something minuscule different than the actual site you need to activate. They are the paid ones that show up at the top of your search, so you think they're legit. You click not paying attention, site looks decent, and enter the card number and 3 digits on the back. By the time you go to use the card, the funds are gone.
It's better to call the number on the card and spend the 5+minutes it takes entering the numbers that way to activate.
