As we all know, lots of people, particularly young, bright adults in states like Mississippi and Louisiana are moving to Texas and other states for work opportunities that are not as prevalent in their home states.
Anybody do the opposite, move from Texas to one of these two states to settle down? How has your experience been?

She’s a hard No, but I’ve tried to talk my wife into retiring in Mississippi. Currently in Texas.
No desire to work or retire in Louisiana.

OS, BSL, and PC are nice. Gulfport and Biloxi are trashy.

I'm moving back to LA from TX as fast as I can.
I don't hate Texas, but it has just gotten ridiculous, housing, cost of living. Etc.
In LA- way Lower cost of living- better food, better outdoor recreation. I can buy a house on the water in LA for what a house in the bad part of town in central TX cost now.

Moved from Louisiana to Texas back in 1989 after graduating college. Many more job opportunities in a larger city such as Dallas or Houston. That's just a fact. However, now that I am nearing retirement we moved back to Louisiana 3 years ago from Frisco TX after living there for 33 years and we love it. Back on family land and close to family again. Still work in DFW area and commute weekly to work but I enjoy being near family, open land, less traffic and people. I guess I'm more looking at retirement than moving up in the corporate world these days.

Almost certainly not, unless they raise other taxes

Lived in Houston 6 years then moved back to LA (family).
Really really miss HEB most of all. Had phenomenal friends in Texas, and an awesome church home, but we made new friends here, & found a great church here too.
Taxes are probably a wash with property taxes, but insurance & groceries are more expensive in LA.
Main thing is you have to go to 4 stores to get most of what you could find in a quick trip to HEB (with much better prices there).
If I didn't have close family here, we'd still be Texans.

I dont know much about either place yet but I was looking at places along the coast and found this interesting stat about pass christian from a google ai search.
“The safest place to live in Mississippi is Pass Christian. This small town is located along the Gulf Coast in southern Mississippi. The city has a population of 6,307 and its violent crime rate is 96% below the national average.Feb 5, 2025”
Don’t know how true it is but I will be researching further.

I think what Mississippi is proposing is no state income tax on retirement income.

They already have that. What the governor already signed is they’ll eliminate the state income tax if they reach certain revenue targets over the next several years. They won’t reach those revenue targets without 1. not eliminating the income tax or 2. raising other taxes enough to replace that revenue.
It was a political maneuvers to placate the uneducated and it worked

Mississippi is already there. My military retirement, social security, and civil service retirement isn't taxed by the state. Additionally, any 401K or TSP withdrawals with a 1099R aren't taxed.
And as 100% VA disability, I don't pay property tax, and get two license plates for $1.00 per year for the disabled veteran plate.

Did not know that had passed. I really like the MS coast,
Sounds like it.

Depends on what you want.
Wanna be fairly close to a large metro with its many flaws but anything you need? Desoto county is for you. (Direct south of Memphis) Somewhere around Hernando or to the immediate east, west, or south of it. Also have the casinos with a straight shot
Hunting? Fishing? Boating? Tishomingo County. (Extreme NE corner of the state. That is baw central up there.
Want a small town? The three main college towns and Tupelo. Tupelo and Starkville have nearby airports that flies to Atlanta (Starkville) and Dallas and Nashville (Tupelo)
Coast? Take your pick. Also have casinos.

If you move to Mississippi you don't have to worry about anymore traffic jams, just potholes!
