Eating Redfish on the MS coast…with new Imported or Domestic designations

Is this Imported “redfish” and actual redfish as we all know it?
Or is this some deep sea toothy looking thing?
The Grouper are always in thin filets. IDK, I would love to know if the “Bay Snapper” was imported. Using familiar names or familiar sounding names to imply ‘local’ is a bit off putting…but I guess if the name is generic enough it works.
ETA: that’s a rough looking Dik-dik.

Selling imported seafood in Des Moines, IA is one thing. Selling it on the gulf coast is another. That just shows they don't give a flying frick.

Does MS require that restaurants give notice of using imported seafood like LA does?

I’ve never seen it in LA, but yes they are making some restaurants denote with I or D…Haven’t seen it everywhere…maybe they give time to print new menus.

Importing Red Fish and Grouper? From where?
Posted on 7/21/25 at 11:28 am to Saskwatch
It’s The Blind Tiger…asking the bartender what species the redfish is would be utterly fruitless. I got the domestic shrimp taco grilled with no sauce, instead of fried and gooped with sweet chili sauce.
My friend got the redfish and did not give two shits that was imported.

I bought some frozen vac sealed grouper from a local seafood shop who sourced from a seafood company in Kenner, I believe. I forgot the name of it as this was some years ago. When I got the fish home to put in the freezer, I saw stickers that said "product of Indonesia" or somewhere foreign. There was nothing to indicate they were selling imported fish there. I called and asked about it. She acted like she had no idea she was selling imported fish since she was buying it all in LA. I still buy fresh LA seafood from her, but I stay away from the fish. I should really check to see if they're still selling imported.

Missed opportunity for sure. Now we all get to ponder whats the point of this thread

The point of the thread was to post a photo of Dik-dik…thought it better to post on the F&DB, and ask a fish question.

Yea, but if all the fish is imported…what the hell was it? We aren’t importing sheepshead, are we?

Let me know when you find some imported “Biloxi bacon” down on the Coast.

But why are we importing grouper and redfish on the coast of The Gulf Of America?

ask the commercial fishermen
Either they can't sell it for enough down here, or the commercial fishery is shrinking, or they can sell it for a higher price elsewhere.

also technically what they wrote on that sign is illegal.
